Cricket – Moeen happy with batting role

All-rounder Moeen Ali is keen to be seen as principally a batsman, despite his matchwinning bowling efforts for England in their first-Test victory over South Africa at Lord's. Off-spinner Moeen claimed a first-ever ten-wicket haul in a Test match as England won the first game of four against the Porteas by a huge 211-run margin. And Bayliss believes a clearing up of what role he is expected to fulfil and the selection of Liam Dawson as a second spin option, was exactly what Moeen needed to produce his best. "We'll stick with one spinner and one batter that bowls a little and that's important for Mo more than anything," Bayliss told reporters. "He wants to be in the team as a batter that bowls a bit, so we've selected him as a batter and the second spinner. It takes that little bit of pressure off him." Moeen ended with match figures of 10-112 against the Proteas, with his second-innings return of 6-53 also a career-best and he is 6/1 with bet365 to be top England first-innings bowler in the second Test, which starts at Trent Bridge on Friday.
