Cobras coach calls for unity

January 04, 2014 14:50:48 UK

Cape Cobras coach Paul Adams wants his players working as a unit ahead of the start of the RAM SLAM Twenty20 competition.

Paul Adams is more concerned that his squad players are tuned in for the start of the competition, rather than the presence of a raft of South African internationals or Sunday’s opening triple header.

The Cobras will have Graeme Smith, JP Duminy, Hashim Amla, Robin Peterson and Rory Kleinveldt in their ranks for the evening tussle with the Knights.

“It’s a benefit but there are different dynamics as well and we’ve got to make sure that everyone is in the right space for the whole tournament,” said Adams.

“It’s very important that we work together as a unit.”

All but five of South Africa’s centrally-contracted players are available for the three matches at Newlands.

All of the six franchises have overseas players this year although only Azhar Mahmood of the Pakistani contingent will be available for the opening round.

Mahmood’s compatriot and Lions team-mate Sohail Tanvir is amongst those due to arrive for the second-round encounters.

The Lions will have Alviro Petersen, Quinton de Kock, Aaron Phangiso and Imran Tahir available for the afternoon meeting with Warriors.

Their opponents are relying on homegrown talent and are keeping fingers crossed that all their players pull through after fitness concerns in recent weeks.

“Davy Jacobs is back, Rusty Theron should be back and so should Christiaan Jonker,” confirmed coach Piet Botha. “I think the only one that’s a bit doubtful is Colin Ingram, but he may yet be fit.”

English fast bowler Graham Onions – one of two overseas players at the Dolphins, with West Indies blaster Chris Gayle the other – will not feature in the morning against the Titans because he has been given extended time off for the festive period.

Cape Cobras are 1.80 to beat the Titans, who are 2.00 to come out on top.
