City drop points as Arsenal raid Etihad

January 18, 2015 18:10:53 UK

Santi Cazorla opened the scoring for Arsenal, netting from the penalty spot.

Manchester City failed to close the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea after succumbing to a 2-0 defeat at home to Arsenal.

City were hoping to move to within two points of the west London outfit following the Blues’ 5-0 demolition of Swansea City on Saturday, but a penalty from Santi Cazorla and an Olivier Giroud close-range header gave Arsenal the three points and their first win at the Etihad Stadium since October 2010.

This means the gap at the top of the Premier League table remains at five points, with Chelsea 1.20 to win the title and Manchester City 6.00 to defend the crown they won last season.

The next Premier League match sees the two title contenders clash at Stamford Bridge on 31st January, where City will hope to make up for lost ground by securing a win at the home of their biggest rivals. City are 3.75 to do just that, with Chelsea 1.90 and the draw 3.60.

The result saw City’s 12-match unbeaten run come to an end and fired Arsenal back into contention for the Champions League places – they now sit just one point and one place behind fourth-place Manchester United. The Gunners are 1.50 to secure a top four finish this season, with United 1.40.
