Ciaran Clark and Idrissa Gueye spare Aston Villa blushes against Wycombe

Aston Villa have suffered enough humiliation in recent times to be too concerned with how much they struggled to overcome League Two promotion candidates Wycombe Wanderers last night. Goals from Ciaran Clark and Idrissa Gueye in the final 15 minutes enabled last year’s FA Cup finalists to book a home tie with Manchester City in the next round and, after all, a four-game unbeaten run looks akin to progress for the Premier League’s bottom team.

Wycombe, back at the ground where they enjoyed an FA Cup semi-final with Liverpool 15 years ago, came out with most of the credit from a replay not to mention around £100,000 to add to the quarter of a million from the first game at Adams Park. For a club boasting only one player signed for a fee, this has been a tie to cherish.
