Christian Benteke misses late penalty as Crystal Palace and Bournemouth draw

Crystal Palace may come to look to at this as the moment conviction was sapped from their bid for Premier League survival. The game was deep into stoppage time at the end when Charlie Daniels tripped Wilfried Zaha in the box with the referee awarding his second spot-kick of the game. Christian Benteke, a player without a goal since May, insisted on taking the resultant penalty to the disgust of his captain, Scott Dann, and other team-mates. There was a certain inevitability when the Belgian’s attempt was duly pushed away by Asmir Begovic.

Benteke would depart to boos, with Roy Hodgson going over to speak with an infuriated supporter in the main stand as he trudged ruefully down the touchline. This was so wasteful, not least because Luka Milivojevic, the team’s allocated penalty taker, was still on the pitch and had thumped home his side’s equaliser before the break. The Serb has never missed one since arriving last January. Benteke, in contrast, has now scored only two of five for the club. His overall game deserved better but, instead, Palace were left cursing his decision and another two points dropped. They remain entrenched in trouble.
