Four rounds from the end of the $430,000 Fide/ Isle of Man event, chances of a bunch finish were growing as just half a point covered the leading nine contenders, among them the world champion, Magnus Carlsen, and the world No 2, Fabiano Caruana.

Top pairings for round eight (of 11) starting on Friday were Caruana (US) v Levon Aronian (Armenia), and Wang Hao (China) v Carlsen (Norway). Caruana and Aronian were joint leaders on 5.5/7, followed by Carlsen and Wang Hao among the seven players on 5/7.
