Fabiano Caruana was in danger of a shock early defeat on Friday evening when the US challenger for the world crown played too passively in the opening and early middle game against Magnus Carlsen’s surprise choice of the Sicilian Defence in game one of their €1m, 12-game series.

Caruana appeared nervous and was clearly more affected by the occasion. Computer assessments around move 20 showed Carlsen with a clear edge of 0.7, although short of a plus one verdict which would suggest a winning advantage. Then Caruana began to play more actively, and his position improved.
