Chess: Carlsen takes Armageddon route to Altibox Norway victory

The world No 1 took his seventh tournament win a row, emerging on top at Stavanger with one round to spare

Magnus Carlsen scored his seventh tournament victory in a row at Stavanger this week, ensuring first prize at Altibox Norway with Friday’s final round to spare. The 28-year-old’s status grows, the favourable comparisons with the all-time legends Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov become more insistent.

The world champion’s run, in a mixture of speed and classical events, began in December with the world blitz at St Petersburg and was followed by Wijk aan Zee, Shamkir, Grenke, Abidjan, Lindores Abbey and now Altibox Norway. His current unbeaten sequence in classical stretches to 67 games, so there is still some way to go to equal Ding Liren’s round 100.
