Celtic go 10 points clear with win at Aberdeen

Tom Rogic scores

Celtic stretched their lead over Aberdeen at the top of the Scottish Premiership to 10 points with victory over the Dons at Pittodrie.

Tom Rogic's controlled half-volley put the reigning champions ahead midway through the first half.

Goalkeeper Joe Lewis denied Scott Sinclair, Moussa Dembele and Rogic as the visitors pressed for a second.

Having struggled to create, Aberdeen had a late flurry and Craig Gordon prevented an Erik Sviatchenko own goal.

Two victories over Celtic at Pittodrie last season had kept the Dons close to Ronny Deila's team until the last few weeks of the season.

But Derek McInnes's men now see themselves struggling to keep pace with Rodgers' Celtic, who have a game in hand and take on the Dons in next month's Scottish League Cup final.

Celtic's first win in the Granite City since May 2015 is their ninth out of ten in the league so far this term and Rodgers remains unbeaten domestically as Celtic boss.

The decisive moment illustrated the visitors' ruthlessness.

A tame defensive header by Shay Logan was pounced upon by Rogic, who took a touch before sending a precise shot beyond Lewis with the outside of the left boot.

The Australian midfielder was denied twice by Lewis in the second half and Rogic also fired narrowly wide as Aberdeen struggled to cope with his movement on and off the ball.

His composure was not always matched by his attacking colleagues, though a terrific run and shot towards the top right corner by Scott Sinclair was only kept out by a stunning Lewis save and the goalkeeper also blocked Moussa Dembele's close-range effort.

Aberdeen and Celtic players

Aberdeen, aside from an early shot by Niall McGinn that Sviatchenko blocked, had little joy against the Celtic back four until after James Maddison and Adam Rooney's introduction from the bench.

Graeme Shinnie was crowded out after bursting into the Celtic box then Maddison volleyed over.

And, from the midfielder's free-kick deep into stoppage time, Gordon beat over Sviatchenko's net-bound header.
