USA 49-27 Argentina, 3:30 2nd quarter

After a timeout, Argentina turns the ball over and then the U.S. turns the ball over and then Argentina turns the ball over. Whatever was talked about during the timeout didn’t quite work.

11.17pm BST

USA 47-27 Argentina, 4:55 2nd quarter

Paul George hits a three, continuing his great game. Luis Scola is now on the bench for Argentina with three fouls. That’s a big problem, because he is their best big. The U.S. currently has a 19-9 rebound advantage.

Men’s basketball: Carmelo Anthony saves USA as Australia fall just short

  • Anthony scores 31 points and becomes all-time US Olympic scorer
  • Patty Mills has 30 points for Australia, who pushed USA all the way

They put a scare into the US basketball team that no one imagined was possible. For most of the game, Australia taunted the best collection of NBA players in the world, throwing up jumpers, shaking the rim with dunks and sending a message that America might not be as mighty as they thought they were.

In the end, the flying jump shots of Patty Mills and David Anderson would fall heartbreakingly short. David would not slay Goliath. The Australians who had tormented the US for more than three quarters had no answer to the 31 points of Carmelo Anthony and 19 from Kyrie Irving. They would not conjure the dark memories of the US’s 2004 Athens failures. They fought to the end and lost 98-88.

11.42pm BST

Out of the timeout, Venezuela takes a three-pointer that goes nowhere. The US aren’t successful on their end either. Not the wisest shot selection by either squad this game.

Ruthless Kevin Durant and USA crush China in Olympic basketball opener

  • American men’s team beat China 119-62 in Rio
  • New Warriors star Durant picks up 25 points for US

There was a moment on Saturday night where the US’s basketball game against China was actually something resembling a competition. This was just after the tip-off when Klay Thompson took a wayward three-pointer and China’s forward Yanyuhang Ding was fouled and hit two free throws. A huge roar filled the crowd in Carioca Arena 1. Many of the fans jumped to their feet as if somehow, improbably the game would actually be close.

Then the US started to run. And run. And run. By the time it was over, they had beaten China 119-62 in a game that was nowhere as close as the score.

A nation united: America’s best come together in Rio to ease the tumult at home

USA are favored to top the medal chart – and for 17 days we will be reminded that what brings us together is stronger than what threatens to pull us apart

Back home a nation is riven. The specter of terrorism, both global and domestic, is the new normal. Elected officials stand by as their constituents are poisoned while police carry out shootings in the street. A bitterly contentious presidential election, one that’s increasingly come to reflect the battleground for America’s soul, careens into the championship rounds. Fear is winning.

USA basketball stars stay on Rio cruise ship but Jimmy Butler fears water

  • Chicago Bulls player ‘doesn’t want his room facing the water’
  • Men’s and women’s teams staying aboard 196-cabin Silver Cloud

The US men’s basketball team caused a stir when they announced they’d be staying on a luxury cruise ship rather than roughing it in the Olympic village. But Jimmy Butler, the Chicago Bulls star, might have wished his team were with the other athletes in the spartan Rio dorms – he’s not a fan of the water.

“Jimmy Butler doesn’t like water,” DeAndre Jordan told Sports Illustrated. “So we were talking about: ‘Would you jump off the boat or would you get in?’ [Butler] says: ‘No, and don’t play with me about it.’ He definitely does not like the water at all.”
