Masters of falling: Daley and Goodfellow dive into British Olympic history

The synchronised diving duo take bronze in the men’s 10 metre platform dive in late-breaking success after six rounds

The first the Maria Lenk aquatic centre knew of Tom Daley and Daniel Goodfellow’s bronze medal in the 10 metre platform dive was a screeching cry from the Team GB coach Jane Figuero a microsecond before the arena itself erupted.

For Daley and Goodfellow, the pursuit of the leaders had come down to the very last knockings, the final dive of 36 in a gruellingly high-end competition. Picked out for a moment against the grey fuzz of the evening sky, they paused, charged and hurled themselves into a final back 3.5 somersault pike, producing under extreme pressure a genuinely beautiful moment of plunging synchronicity.

Olympics diving: men’s synchronised 10m platform final – live!

8.40pm BST

Mexico take on the same dive as Russia, even lifting their right knees in time. They’re in perfect sync for take-off, but both fail to land the entry – costing individual execution and collective points. That’s good news for GB, with Mexico slipping behind Germany.

Less good for GB: the USA continue to deliver, nailing a dive with 3.4 difficulty and picking up 85 points. Not the best synchronisation, but both pulled the dive off expertly. Ukraine, not out of the medal mix, are as one throughout their inward dive, and match the American score.

8.37pm BST

Russia take on their most difficult dive, skipping along the platform and thundering into a quadruple somersault. It’s not the best, the heavy splash reverberating around the arena. Just mid-60s there, while Germany take on a backward somersault, and deliver their best dive to date, getting the coaches to their feet. 92.8, with high marks for synchronisation.

50 faces to watch out for at the 2016 Rio Olympics: part one

From Nicola Adams to Jessica Ennis-Hill, via Usain Bolt, here are the first 10 of our 50 top names to watch as the summer’s biggest sporting event nears

In May, by winning the world flyweight title in Kazakhstan, Adams seized the last major title to have eluded her, meaning she heads to Rio as the reigning Olympic, World, Commonwealth and European Games champion, having also previously won European and EU golds. Times, it is fair to say, have changed in women’s boxing, and Adams has been at the vanguard of the transformation. When she won her first world medal in Ningbo, China in 2008, she did not even travel with a physio, but by the time she reached Astana she had an eight-strong support staff. Now, as a true titan of her sport, it is time to start winning those titles all over again. Will Macpherson

“I will never, ever experience more pressure than standing on the end of the board, looking down at the Olympic rings for my final dive with 18,000 people in the audience in London and millions of people watching at home,” said Daley of his experience in 2012, when he won bronze. “There will never be a more pressurised moment in my life than that moment and I managed to handle it.
