Los Angeles Rams fire head coach Jeff Fisher after five losing seasons

  • Rams coach fired after dismal 42-14 loss to Falcons on Sunday
  • Special teams coach John Fassel named interim head coach
  • Owner Stan Kroenke: “This is the right time to make a change”

The Los Angeles Rams have fired coach Jeff Fisher after nearly five losing seasons leading the franchise.

The move comes as a surprise because the team had recently announced they had signed him to a three-year extension before this season. But the Rams have been an uninspiring failure in their return to LA with a 4-9 record after Sunday’s dismal 42-14 home loss to Atlanta during which Fisher was booed by the Coliseum crowd.

NFL weekend preview: Beckham and Giants to push past sinking Eagles

A bye week should tip things in New York’s favour against their NFC East rivals, and expect wins for Baltimore, Miami, Carolina, Tennessee and Denver

Some people just never learn. People like me, apparently. Despite being caught out by a tied game in week seven, neither I nor anybody else taking part in our Pick Six contest thought to predict one in week eight. So that’s no perfect scores for anybody. Honestly, what were we thinking?

The Patriots offense is fine without Brady – it’s defense that’s the worry

Jimmy Garopollo’s injury may end up being merely a temporary setback for the New England Patriots but they are far from perfect

For most of the first half, it looked like the New England Patriots had discovered their Next Tom Brady. OK, that may be a stretch, but it at least looked like they had found a player they could sell as a potential Next Tom Brady to one of the many quarterback-starved teams once the Actual Tom Brady returned from his four week league-mandated vacation. In his second game as a starter, Jimmy Garoppolo went 18-for-27, passing for 234 yards as the Patriots built up a 21-0 lead over the Miami Dolphins. Garoppolo, coming off New England’s huge Week 1 road win over the Arizona Cardinals, was once again putting in an impressive showing without the help of Rob Gronkowski, who missed his straight game with a hamstring injury.

Then, shortly before half-time, Garoppolo went down with a shoulder injury after a hard hit from Kiko Alonso. He would not return, meaning that it was up to rookie third-string quarterback Jacoby Brissett to finish the game. Capitalizing on Garoppolo’s absence, Miami quarterback Ryan Tannenhill lead his team to a near-comeback in the second half, one only snuffed in the game’s final seconds when his attempt at a game-tying touchdown was intercepted by Duron Harmon. The Patriots held on to a 31-24 victory in their home opener, but they made it far closer than it probably should have been.

Titans agree to trade No1 overall NFL draft pick to LA Rams

Rams can choose the quarterback of their choice as they look to make a splash in LA, while Tennessee now has six of this draft’s first 76 picks

The Tennessee Titans agreed Thursday to trade the No1 overall pick in this month’s NFL draft to the Los Angeles Rams.

This is just the seventh trade involving the top overall pick since 1990 and first since 2004. That was when San Diego drafted Eli Manning and traded his rights to the New York Giants.

NFL off-season predictions: RGIII to the Cowboys and a look at the draft

With the Super Bowl done and dusted we turn our attention to the events that will hit the headlines in the coming months

As the dust settles on another NFL season, we still have one important piece of business to tie up. The time has come to name the winners from our weekly prediction competitions.

I invite you to stand in virtual applause for jspaceman, who sealed their place as champion of our Pick the Playoffs game by correctly predicting that the Broncos would beat the Panthers at Super Bowl 50. They called 10 out of 11 games correctly through the postseason, the only miss coming in the Patriots’ divisional round win over Kansas City.

NFL round-up: Carolina Panthers survive furious New York Giants’ rally

  • Giants’ playoff hopes on life support after rally falls short
  • Washington take inside track in NFC East division chase
  • Mariota injured as Titans falls to Tom Brady and Patriots
  • Vikings roar past slumping Bears to keep pace in NFC North

Cam Newton continued to prove he is worthy of being the NFL’s Most Valuable Player as he first led undefeated Carolina to a huge lead over the New York Giants and then took them 49 yards in seven plays to set up game-ending field goal in the Panthers’ 38-35 victory. On a day when the Giants scored four second-half touchdowns to tie the game at 35-35 with 1:46 left, Newton was fantastic.

The Panthers quarterback completed 25 of 45 passes for 340 yards and five touchdowns. He also raced for a team-high 100 yards on the ground including a 10-yard scramble that set up Graham Gano’s winning 43-yard field goal. Carolina is now 14-0 but coach Ron Rivera has expressed an unwillingness to rest all his players to avoid an injury before the playoffs. With games at Atlanta and home against Tampa Bay, the Panthers have a good chance of being the second team ever to finish the regular season 16-0.
