Maria Sharapova on failing that drug test: ‘I felt trapped, tricked’

When she was banned from tennis, her career looked over. She talks frankly about how she came back fighting

  • Scroll down for an extract from Sharapova’s autobiography

We are back where it all began: 5500 34th Street West, Bradenton, Florida. This is where six-year-old Masha Sharapova and her father Yuri turned up 24 years ago, begging to be given a chance at the tennis club for rich kids run by the legendary coach Nick Bollettieri.

You can still smell the privilege. A security man at the imposing gates looks at my two carrier bags and assumes I’m homeless: “Excuse me, what are you doing here?” I tell him I’m here to interview Sharapova. He looks me up and down with thinly disguised contempt, and asks if I can move away from the entrance. “Or at least hide your bags. The first thing our guests can see as they drive in is your bags.” I begin to see how alien this must have felt for the Sharapovas, who arrived in America armed with only $700 and a dream.

  • Former world No1 says she wants to return for Australian Open
  • 23-time grand slam champion says she has been judged due to race

Serena Williams has spoken about pregnancy, race and body image in a wide-ranging interview with Vogue.

Williams and her fiance, the Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, are due to welcome their first child at the end of the year, but she says she wants to return as early as January to defend her Australian Open title. “It’s the most outrageous plan,” she said. “I just want to put that out there. That’s, like, three months after I give birth. I’m not walking anything back, but I’m just saying it’s pretty intense.”

Wimbledon diary: Murray feels the love from Serena for showing feminist side

‘We love Andy Murray,’ said Williams after his correction of a journalist who said Sam Querrey was the first US player to reach a major semi-final since 2009

Andy Murray might still be feeling a bit sore after his quarter-final defeat, but at least he won praise from Serena Williams for correcting a journalist who said Sam Querrey was “the first US player to reach a major semi-final since 2009”. Williams was pleased to hear Murray point out that American women have fared better than the men during the past eight years.

So Serena would be 700th, reckons McEnroe. It’s all pointless | Victoria Coren Mitchell

How idiotic to ‘rank’ a woman tennis star with men – but then, why knock balls about in the first place?

When John McEnroe commented, last week, that if Serena Williams played tennis on the men’s tour she would be “like, 700” in the rankings, she replied on Twitter thus:

“Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based.”

John McEnroe: men and women should play each other to solve Serena question

John McEnroe has refused to apologise for saying that Serena Williams would be ranked around No700 in the men’s game.

Williams, the holder of 23 grand slam singles titles, told McEnroe to “respect me and my privacy as I’m trying to have a baby,” after he made the comments during an interview with NPR on Sunday. During the interview McEnroe stressed that Williams was the “best female player ever — no question” and added that a woman one day could be the best player on the planet.

John McEnroe: Serena Williams would be 700th on men’s tour – audio

John McEnroe dismissed suggestions that Serena Williams was the best player in the world, arguing that she would ‘be like 700 in the world” if she played on the men’s tour. His comments came during an interview on NPR on Sunday when he was promoting his new memoir. Williams has won 23 grand slam singles titles over the course of her career, the most recent coming at the Australian Open in 2017 when she was already pregnant with her first child.

Serena Williams would be ‘700 in the world’ on men’s tour, says McEnroe

  • ‘Perhaps [her ranking] would be a little higher, perhaps it’d be a little lower’
  • Williams has won 23 grand slam titles

John McEnroe has reopened a timeworn debate by saying that Serena Williams would “be like 700 in the world” if she played on the men’s tour. That would put Williams (career earnings: $84.4m) just behind Brazil’s Wilson Leite (career earnings: $74,000) in the men’s world rankings.

McEnroe’s comments came during an NPR interview on Sunday to promote his memoir, But Seriously. “Perhaps [her ranking] would be a little higher, perhaps it’d be a little lower,” he said. “And on a given day Serena could beat some players. I believe because she’s so incredibly strong mentally that she could overcome some situations where players would choke because she’s been in it so many times, so many situations at Wimbledon, the US Open etc. But if she had to just play the circuit — the men’s circuit — that would be an entirely different story.”

Lewis Hamilton inspired by Serena Williams response to Ilie Nastase abuse

• Williams a ‘powerful, independent black woman’, says Briton
• Mercedes driver says he does not want team orders and never has

Lewis Hamilton has spoken out in support of Serena Williams after she was the victim of racial abuse from the former player Ilie Nastase last week. The British driver, speaking before the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi, hailed Williams’s reaction to the abuse and said she was an inspiration as a “powerful, independent black woman”.

Nastase, who won both the French and US Open, was overheard saying of Williams’s unborn child: “Let’s see what colour it has. Chocolate with milk?” Williams, whose fiancé Alexis Ohanian is white, posted a strong response on Instagram, saying: “It disappoints me to know we live in a society where people like Ilie Nastase can make such racist comments towards myself and unborn child.”

Ilie Nastase must be evicted from tennis for his behaviour at Fed Cup | Kevin Mitchell

The Romanian gave great entertainment in his day, but he has crossed a line with his abuse of Johanna Konta, Anne Keothavong and Serena Williams

It is 45 years since Centre Court at Wimbledon rose to applaud the charismatic entertainer that was Ilie Nastase, loser of a memorable five-set final against the American Stan Smith. After the Romanian’s appalling behaviour in Constanta this weekend during Great Britain’s Fed Cup tie against the home team he coaches, it is unlikely a British audience will ever again give him such rapturous acclaim.

When the 70-year-old Nastase reduced Johanna Konta to tears in the second set of her match against Sorana Cirstea on Saturday by calling her, “a fucking bitch” he transformed a mere sporting event into ugly farce.

Johanna Konta can be world No1 in Serena’s absence, says Andy Murray

• Murray backs fellow Briton to continue her rise up the WTA rankings
• ‘If she steps up her game there’s no reason she can’t get close to the top’

Andy Murray believes Johanna Konta can join him as No1 in the world this summer – perhaps when he defends his Wimbledon title – while Serena Williams leaves the Tour to have her first child.

Murray said Konta, who is playing for Great Britain in the Fed Cup in Romania this weekend, is among a handful of contenders who can realistically wonder about replacing the American. Williams revealed on Wednesday she is 20 weeks into her pregnancy and due to give birth in August. Murray, whose own grip on the men’s crown was weakened in a surprise defeat here on Thursday but has just about a big enough lead to hold off the challenge of Novak Djokovic, believes Konta “has a good chance” in a fragmented field, having risen to No7 in the world when she beat Caroline Wozniacki in Miami this month.

  • Angelique Kerber will reclaim No1 ranking regardless of her finish

Serena Williams has withdrawn from this week’s tournament at Indian Wells due to a left knee injury, a decision that will cost her the world No1 ranking she reclaimed at the Australian Open.
