Antonio Conte gets off to losing start with Chelsea in Austria

• Rapid Vienna 2-0 Chelsea
• Italian hails signing of N’Golo Kanté from Leicester

Antonio Conte’s first game in charge of Chelsea ended in a low-key 2-0 defeat after his new side put in a sluggish pre-season display at Rapid Vienna.

Hours after completing the signing of the Leicester City midfielder N’Golo Kanté, Conte fielded a team missing a clutch of key players who were in action at Euro 2016, and gave fringe squad members including Victor Moses, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Papy Djilobodji a chance to impress. However, his beaten side still featured some key names, including captain John Terry, Diego Costa, Willian and Branislav Ivanovic.

Valencia 6-0 romp gives Gary Neville very happy birthday

• Valencia thrash Rapid Vienna in the Mestalla
• Borussia Dortmund beat Porto 2-0

On Gary Neville’s 41st birthday, Valencia set a Europa League record by scoring five goals in the first half of their tie against a hapless Rapid Vienna. Despite the second leg still to come next week, Santi Mina, 20, all but ensured they reached the last 16 by scoring twice and setting up the other three goals before half-time. Rodrigo scored in the penultimate minute to make the final score 6-0, equalling the competition record set by Steaua Bucharest 18 months ago. It came five days after Neville saw his team win for the first time under him in La Liga, when they beat Espanyol.

And in their stadium against Rapid, Mina started the rout after four minutes and Dani Parejo doubled the lead six minutes later. Mina scored his second after 25 minutes and Álvaro Negredo made it 4-0 four minutes later. André Gomes scored the fifth 10 minutes before half-time.

Europa League roundup: Napoli reach last 32 with 100% record

• Nathaniel Chalobah scores in Italian side’s 5-2 win over Legia Warsaw
• Bryan Ruiz strikes for Sporting Lisbon in 3-1 victory over Besiktas

The Chelsea loanee Nathaniel Chalobah’s goal helped Napoli advance with the Europa League’s only 100% record. The England Under-21 international, who is yet to play a senior game for José Mourinho’s Blues, broke the deadlock in Naples as the Italians made it six wins from six with a 5-2 success over Legia Warsaw.

Their qualification had already been sealed before kick-off and FC Midtjylland joined them in advancing out of Group D thanks to a 1-1 draw with Club Brugge, for whom the ex-Middlesbrough and Burnley forward Jelle Vossen scored.
