Find out who the big winners of the 2016-17 NBA season were. Note: the Golden State Warriors may make a few appearances

On Monday night, the NBA finally handed out its regular season awards, roughly 3m years after the last game of the 2017 finals. But why trust the league when you have us here at the Guardian? OK, sure, we will admit that some of the categories that follow are not official. In fact, a few of these “awards” might be more accurately classified as “insults,” but we assure you that they will combine to give you a perfect picture of the 2016-17 NBA season.

NBA draft: social media error sees Fultz heading No1 to (team name) and (City)

  • Lonzo Ball will stay in California to play for Los Angeles Lakers
  • Boston Celtics take Jayson Tatum at No3 overall
  • Timberwolves trade for Jimmy Butler in deal with Bulls

The Philadelphia 76ers got the player they wanted and Lonzo Ball the team he wanted. The 76ers selected guard Markelle Fultz on Thursday night with the No1 pick and the Lakers followed by taking Ball, the start of a record-setting run of one-and-dones in the NBA draft. The point guards from the Pac-12 Conference began a run of seven straight freshmen. Nine of the first 10 selections played just one season of college ball.

Fultz’s selection was made all the more memorable when a pre-written template on his Instagram page wasn’t filled out correctly, leaving the interesting caption: “Excited to head to (City) and join the (team name).” It was unclear at the time of publication who (team name) were hoping to select in the second round or what the fans in (City) thought of Thursday’s events.

NBA trade deadline: the winners (Pelicans) and losers (Kings)

The New Orleans Pelicans took a step forward, the Sacramento Kings took a step back, the LA Lakers hit the reset button – and the Boston Celtics went nowhere

Heading into NBA trade deadline day, there was a very real fear that the biggest move of the year had already been made. But while nothing was likely to top the New Orleans Pelicans’ deal for DeMarcus Cousins, there was still plenty of talk that either the Chicago Bulls’ Jimmy Butler or the Indiana Pacers’ Paul George could find their way to a contender before the 3pm ET deadline.

Basketball in 2016: 10 memorable moments

The Golden State Warriors’ dream season ends in a LeBron James nightmare; legends leave the game; the basketball world mourns Pat Summitt

You can be forgiven for thinking that the Cleveland Cavaliers were finished. After all, no team in NBA history had ever come back from a 3-1 NBA Finals lead and they were playing a Golden State Warriors team that wasn’t just good but historically unprecedented. Having gone 73-9 in the regular season, the 2015-16 Warriors were arguably a single win away from being in the “best NBA team ever” conversation.

‘Just shoot’: Ben Simmons slowly adjusts to life as an NBA star

The 76ers want their No1 pick to be the heart and soul of a franchise desperate for inspiration – but there are many things this 19-year-old needs to master

Watching Ben Simmons pass a basketball is something you could do all day. At 6ft 10in, he towers over the other point guards, flicking throws to team-mates that blur in the arena lights. It is easy to see how he can be that rare generational player who will lead the Philadelphia 76ers for the next decade.

The NBA draft was about as orderly and restrained as Police Academy 6 | Dave Schilling

It’s part of the draft’s DNA to have no obvious answers, but somehow, Thursday night’s edition made even less sense than usual

The NBA draft is, by its very nature, unpredictable. As much as pundits and fans like to pretend they know who will boom and who will bust, we don’t really know how these players’ careers will turn out. We think we know who’s going to make an impact in the league, we crunch numbers, measure wingspans, and assess intangibles like “poise” or “maturity”. These are all shots in the dark of the most egregious variety. We’re guessing, especially people, like myself, who have never played professional basketball. These are educated guesses, but they are guesses nonetheless. It is in the DNA of the draft to have no obvious answers, but somehow, last night’s edition of this sacred summer tradition made even less sense than usual.

Australia’s basketball prospects have never looked brighter as two Australians have been picked in the top 10 of the 2016 NBA Draft.

NBA draft 2016: Ben Simmons tipped to be No1 pick – live!

12.17am BST

I don’t know if that’s Ben Simmons’ grandfather, but I love how much he is annoyed by the cameras invading his table space.

There is a lot of talk about this draft being “weak” after Simmons at No. 1 and (presumably) Brandon Ingram at No. 2, but no one really knows. The NBA Draft is famously hit and miss and that’s what makes it fun. Well, fun for those of us who aren’t employed as NBA general managers.

This draft could be weak and full of NBA role players. Or it could be like 2011 when Klay Thompson went No. 11, Kawhi Leonard No. 15 and Jimmy Butler at No. 30. Who’s to say? Not me. If I knew, I’d be running an NBA team.

The NBA draft lottery was an anti-climax but at least the 76ers won something

Sam Hinkie is gone, but his legacy will live on as the Sixers finally nab the top overall pick after several seasons of basketball misery

Dikembe Mutombo knew it all along. On Tuesday, the NBA legend sent out a tweet to congratulate the Philadelphia 76ers on landing the top overall pick in this year’s NBA draft. This wouldn’t normally be notable, except for the fact that this was several hours before the league had actually announced anything.

Mutombo quickly deleted the tweet, but, as it turns out, he had psychic abilities (or inside information). When the league unveiled the results of this year’s draft lottery shortly before the start of Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, it turned out that the 76ers indeed would be getting the first pick after all.

Philadelphia 76ers win lottery to get first pick in NBA draft

  • NBA’s worst team will have first option on Australian Ben Simmons on 23 June
  • LA Lakers get second pick and Boston Celtics have third

The Philadelphia 76ers landed their first No1 overall draft pick in 20 years on Tuesday at the NBA’s draft lottery, putting Australia’s Ben Simmons in line to head to the team that finished the season as the worst in the league.

Philadelphia have endured a dreadful three-year stretch that was a part of a rebuilding plan to restock the franchise with top picks. Their record of 10-72 this past season gave them the best chance at getting the No1 selection for the 23 June draft and it paid off as they came out ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics, who will draft second and third.
