Exeter City and Newport County offer warming antidote to football’s gaudy elite | Jeremy Alexander

Newport County’s visit to St James Park delivered a meeting between two community-led clubs that bear out the benefits of fan ownership

For Exeter City the 1-0 win over Newport was as sweet as they come and they are coming quite often at present. They stay top of League Two. For County, starting the game in second and unbeaten, the defeat was understandably frustrating after failing to make their domination of the first 35 minutes count. All it did in the end was add to Exeter’s satisfaction.

Mark O’Brien’s late goal saves Newport County and sends Hartlepool down

• Irish defender’s 89th-minute goal keeps Newport in the Football League
• Two goals from Devante Rodney earn Hartlepool a 2-1 win in vain

Hartlepool United, the club where Brian Clough started his managerial career and who survived re-election a record 14 times, saw their 96-year stay in the Football League end in heartbreaking fashion when Mark O’Brien’s 89th-minute winner kept Newport County up and relegated the north‑east club.

On a dramatic afternoon, two goals in nine minutes from the 18-year-old substitute Devante Rodney looked to have saved Hartlepool, turning a 1-0 deficit at home to Doncaster into a 2-1 lead. Matthew Bates’s side had started the day in the relegation zone and two points behind Newport but with the south Wales side drawing 1-1 against Notts County at Rodney Parade, Rodney’s strikes, the first of his professional career, seemed to have saved Hartlepool.

Michael Flynn has overseen an extraordinary recovery but League Two survival still hinges on a visit from Notts County on the last day of the season

There is a picture doing the rounds on social media that has Michael Flynn’s face superimposed above Steve McQueen’s body, with the Newport County manager about to pull off League Two’s version of the Great Escape on that famous Triumph motorbike.

For those not familiar with his story, Flynn is the local hero who has transformed Newport’s fortunes since taking over as manager in March, breathing new life into a football club that barely had a pulse when he was asked to step up from his role as first-team coach to replace Graham Westley.
