Ana Carrasco became the first woman to win an individual world championship motorcycle race on Sunday in Portugal.

The 20-year-old Spaniard, riding a Kawasaki Ninja 300, found a draft on the final stretch to overtake Yamaha riders Alfonoso Coppola (by 0.053sec) and Marc García (0.062) in round 10 of the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship.

John Surtees obituary

Motorcycling champion who went on to F1 success

John Surtees, who has died aged 83, was the only man to have won the world championship on both two wheels and four – motorcycle grands prix and Formula One. A naturally gifted and accomplished competitor, he might well have achieved more success in F1 had he concentrated more of his huge talent on simply driving rather than attempting to master all the facets of running a motor racing team.

Surtees, who won the 1964 world championship by a single point driving for Ferrari, was a deeply intense person who took his profession extremely seriously. Yet he was also extremely sensitive and frequently took umbrage at the slightest criticism, no matter how gentle or well-intentioned it might be.

Remy Gardner could miss this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix after the motorcycle racer was arrested in Japan on Monday for allegedly driving without a license.

Japanese newspaper reports said Gardner, 18, is now in Japanese police custody with his father, the motorcycling great Wayne Gardner, who was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of assault following a scuffle with three men at the Twin Ring Motegi racetrack, 160 km north of Tokyo.
