Ireland’s Daryl Murphy keeps World Cup hopes alive in win against Moldova

Brace yourselves for a roaring climax in Cardiff. This victory means the Republic of Ireland will travel to Wales knowing that, if either side wins Monday’s feverishly anticipated Celtic duel, it will be certain of finishing in second place, at least, in Group D. Top spot will be up for grabs in the unlikely event of the leaders, Serbia, stumbling at home to Georgia. “It’s there for us,” said Martin O’Neill. “Let’s go for it.”

Daryl Murphy made sure there was no spoilsport deviation from that script by scoring twice here to dispatch the group’s bottom side. Murphy and Callum O’Dowda, in particular, made strong cases for roles in Monday’s match and eased criticism of O’Neill in advance of a much fiercer test.

James McClean’s double drives Republic of Ireland past Moldova in qualifier

The Republic of Ireland’s chances of qualifying for Russia in 2018 are looking rosier after they overcame a mid-match wobble in Moldova to record an eventually comfortable victory, thanks to James McClean’s two second-half goals.

It was a win that Martin O’Neill’s side always deserved, and Irish spirits will have been further boosted by Wales dropping points at home to Georgia earlier in the evening, which leaves the Republic second in Group D. However, the manner in which they lost their way and conceded a sloppy equaliser shortly before half-time will concern the Republic’s manager.

Jonathan Walters warns Ireland are in no-win situation against Moldova

• Attacker likens World Cup qualifier to cup ties with lower-league clubs
• Martin O’Neill short of midfield options after Robbie Brady’s concussion

The Republic of Ireland rarely tend to do things the easy way. Martin O’Neill’s team may be able to put it up to some of the world’s best, as Italy and France will attest to following the European Championship, but too often they struggle against the lesser teams.

That age-old problem was obvious against Georgia, a team sandwiched between Thailand and Puerto Rico in Fifa’s rankings, on Thursday and, before the trip to Moldova on Sunday, Jonathan Walters said that such fixtures are no-win situations.

Gareth Bale will break Ian Rush’s Wales record this campaign, says Coleman

• Bale to be Wales’ all-time top goalscorer in 13 months, says manager
• Coleman admits: ‘I can’t tie down somebody like him’

Chris Coleman believes Gareth Bale will break Ian Rush’s record and become Wales’ all-time leading goalscorer in the current World Cup qualifying campaign after the Real Madrid forward struck twice against Moldova to take his tally for his country to 24. Bale’s double helped Wales to a comfortable 4-0 victory, lifted him above Ivor Allchurch and Trevor Ford into outright second place and, most significantly, within four goals of Rush.

He has now scored 20 goals in his last 31 appearances for his country – only four arrived in the first 31 matches – and Coleman predicts that Rush’s record will fall by the time Wales finish their campaign at home against the Republic of Ireland in October next year.

“Please rise for the national anthem of Turkey,” says the Croatian stadium announcer in Zagrab, says to a crowd of none. This is a match being played behind closed doors, as punishment for racist behaviour during a match against Norway earlier this year, as well as a swastika being drawn on the pitch in Split before playing Italy. There were also flares thrown onto the pitch against the Czech Republic.

Wales’ Chris Coleman wants ‘more campaign football’ after Euro 2016 joy

• Coleman enthusiastic before 2018 World Cup qualifier against Moldova

As Chris Coleman reflected on a summer when he admitted his head had been turned by the prospect of a job in the Premier League, the Wales manager cast his mind back to those extraordinary scenes in Cardiff after Euro 2016 when more than 200,000 people lined the streets to welcome the team home and spoke about how his “desperation” to experience more of the same had fuelled his desire to stay.

Marc Janko scores spectacular winner for Austria in Russia

• Russia 0-1 Austria
• Sweden defeat Montenegro 3-1 in Stockholm

Marc Janko scored with a spectacular overhead kick as Austria maintained their grip on European Championship qualifying Group G with a 1-0 away win over Russia. Second-placed Sweden beat Montenegro 3-1 with Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring two goals.

Janko’s winner came in the 33rd minute after Russia’s Denis Glushakov blocked two attempts by Zlatko Junozovic inside the penalty area. The rebound rose high and Janko timed his jump perfectly to score with his back to goal. Julian Baumgartlinger then missed a chance to make it 2-0 when he shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
