How Marcus Rashford is following in familiar footsteps at Manchester United

The 18-year-old who scored twice on his Manchester United debut on Thursday was turned away by the club’s rivals but is the latest in a long line to make the transition from Fletcher Moss Rangers to Old Trafford

Marcus Rashford’s chance to etch his name into Manchester United folklore came after he was rejected by Manchester City for being too small.

The 18-year-old given minutes to prepare for Thursday’s debut against Midtjylland ended the Europa League last-32 tie in dreamland after his two goals ensured the Danish champions were knocked out, 6-3 on aggregate.

Louis van Gaal praises ‘fantastic’ Manchester United youngsters after Midjtylland win

• Teenager Marcus Rashford scores twice in Europa League win
• Young United players ‘hit a fantastic level’ says Louis van Gaal

Louis van Gaal praised the bravery of his young players as they overcame Midtjylland to make Friday’s draw for the last 16 of the Europa League and said he never had any hesitation in giving his two-goal hero Marcus Rashford a debut once Anthony Martial suffered a hamstring injury in the pre-match warm-up.

The young academy graduate stepped up from the bench after Martial was forced to withdraw – something of a problem for United after the goalkeeper David de Gea was injured in the warm-up for the first leg – and played as to the manor born.

Marcus Rashford doubles up to become Manchester United’s latest saviour | James Riach

An 18-year-old local lad steps in for the hamstrung Anthony Martial and helps his United team pull a convincing 5-1 victory out of the fire against Midtjylland

Louis van Gaal cited Murphy’s law to defend his team after last week’s 2–1 defeat at Midtjylland and while he could actually have used that explanation legitimately this time around, a teenage debutant saved him the trouble.

The 18-year-old local lad Marcus Rashford was a relative unknown before Anthony Martial pulled up in the warm-up but he ended up saving Manchester United from embarrassment and, more significant, helped keep the manager in situ for the time being. He scored twice to claw his team back in front after an own goal had got United back level and, although there were further goals from Ander Herrera, a penalty, and Memphis Depay, it was undoubtedly the teenager’s night.

Manchester United see off Midtjylland with Marcus Rashford’s debut double

An almost unrecognisably callow Manchester United made life difficult for themselves against the footballing midgets of Midtjylland by going behind and then missing a series of chances including a first-half penalty, before the day was saved by 18-year-old Marcus Rashford, a reserve who found out he was playing only a few minutes before kick-off.

Rashford scored twice in the second half, both convincing close-range finishes, to complete an extraordinary day’s work and keep his side in Europe and his manager in a job, at least for a few more days. Victory was embellished by Ander Herrera’s late penalty, which was swiftly followed by a stunning effort from Memphis Depay.

Louis van Gaal urges Manchester United to use any negativity as motivation

• Van Gaal: ‘Midtjylland has very good organisation, very detailed’
• Only a win in Europa League second leg will defuse the scrutiny

Louis van Gaal was sitting in a room decorated with memories of some of Manchester United’s greatest European nights when he suddenly exclaimed, preparing for a game that he simply dare not lose, that his players would have to be “horny” to avoid another considerable embarrassment. Unfortunately for Van Gaal, he will also be aware that a Thursday night tie against FC Midtjylland is not a natural setting to get the juices flowing and he admitted his team might be suffering because of all the scrutiny on his own position.

“I think maybe it can be an influence,” Van Gaal said, when he was asked if he suspected his team had been affected by all the speculation surrounding his job. “There is a lot of criticism so it can influence them, but they have to use their tools to ignore all the criticism because that’s very important – and not only the criticism of their manager but also about themselves.”

Louis van Gaal has demanded more passion from his Manchester United players in the return leg of their Europa League last-32 tie against Midtjylland, saying: “I often use the word horny with my players.”

United face Midtjylland having been humiliated in the first leg of the tie, the 2-1 defeat piling more pressure on Van Gaal, whose future remains under severe scrutiny.

Louis van Gaal hails ‘fantastic’ Manchester United win over Shrewsbury

• United sweep into FA Cup quarter-finals with 3-0 win
• Van Gaal hopes side can use confidence against Midtjylland

Louis van Gaal hailed a “committed” Manchester United performance as they swept aside Shrewsbury Town to set up an FA Cup quarter-final at home against West Ham United and, in the process, enjoyed a timely confidence boost ahead of Thursday’s crucial Europa League second-leg last-32 tie against Midtjylland.

Chris Smalling scored United’s first and Juan Mata got the second with a contentious free-kick routine that Van Gaal claimed they had learned from watching Midtjylland. Jesse Lingard, Ander Herrera and Anthony Martial all stood offside initially, behind the Shrewsbury wall, before running out as the Spaniard ran up to strike the ball.
