With 23 wins in 28 games, Miami has surged back into playoff contention after sitting 11-30. Chris Smith reports on a remarkable NBA turnaround

“We just wanted our games to matter,” said Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra before last week’s thrashing of the Toronto Raptors, which earned his team a 21st victory in 25 games.

NBA owners who bemoan superteams have only themselves to blame

As Golden State’s superteam takes form, the NBA owners who complain over the loss of league-wide competitive balance are learning there’s no turning back

Kevin Durant’s decision to join the Golden State Warriors as a free agent has much of the basketball world up in arms. Reggie Miller claimed Durant “traded a sacred legacy for cheap jewelry” in a 1,500-word screed for Bleacher Report. His fellow Hall of Famer Charles Barkley said Durant “is trying to cheat his way into a championship” in an interview with ESPN. Their responses echo the social media din of fans mad at Durant for either betraying the Thunder or forming a team so strong in California that a championship for the Warriors in 2017 is an inevitability.

One would think NBA fans have learned the limits of inevitability by now, with the juggernaut Miami Heat capturing just two titles with their big three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, and with the Warriors of just this past season failing to claim the trophy despite setting a new single-season wins record. But that hasn’t proved to be the case. Instead, the panic over Durant’s decision has gone as high as the commissioner’s office.

Death of a dynasty: the avoidable end of Miami Heat’s Big Three era

Dwyane Wade is a Chicago Bull, leaving the Miami Heat after 13-years. But like LeBron James’ decision to head home in 2014, it did not have to end this way

Successful eras come and go in sports, and with the promise of free agency riches, soaring salary caps and the clash of egos when it comes to contracts, dynasties are harder than ever to maintain.

With the shock departure of franchise cornerstone Dwyane Wade, who has agreed a two-year deal with his hometown Chicago Bulls, Miami’s fabled Big Three of Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh has been reduced to one, with serious doubts over whether the latter will ever play professionally again.

Miami Heat lose Dwyane Wade to Chicago Bulls: ‘A bad summer for us’

  • 34-year old takes up two year, $47m deal to head north
  • Shooting guard won three titles during long career in Florida

Days after Kevin Durant’s departure from Oklahoma City Thunder, another NBA All-Star has left a team he has called home for his entire career with the news that Dwyane Wade has committed to joining the Chicago Bulls from the Miami Heat.

Wade revealed his decision in a letter released to the Associated Press. “This has been an extremely emotional and tough decision to come to. After 13 years, I have decided to embark on a new journey with the Chicago Bulls. This was not an easy decision, but I feel I have made the right choice for myself and my family,” wrote Wade.

NBA free agency winners and losers: the Warriors’ title hopes and KD’s likeability

Kevin Durant has made the Golden State Warriors the biggest winners of free agency, who were the others?

This offseason was always going to hinge on what Kevin Durant would do when he hit free agency. Durant’s surprise decision to sign a two-year, $54.3m deal with the Golden State Warriors could end up altering the league just as much as LeBron James’s decision to join the Miami Heat back in 2010. Durant’s shocking announcement came while the league was still adjusting to the new realities brought about by a salary cap. Some have found their situations greatly improved by the events of the last few days. Others, particularly those who hail from the Oklahoma City area, not so much.

Which NBA team has the best chance at signing Kevin Durant?

The conventional wisdom is that KD will stay in Oklahoma, but several other teams want this summer’s biggest prize. Dave Schilling runs down the options

When you’re Kevin Durant, arguably one of the three best players in the NBA today, you can dictate terms. Not only do you have all of the leverage in a free agent negotiation, you can also straight up tell teams where the meetings will take place. Unlike what, say, Dwight Howard or Carmelo Anthony did when going through the summer courtship process – flying to team headquarters, sitting through elaborate boardroom pitches, pretending to care about the strength of the arena’s WiFi network, etc – KD has planned a vacation to the Hamptons, where all the prospective suitors will come to make their case.

The whole thing sounds like a demented version of The Bachelor – Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers forced to share the same bedroom, RC Buford chilling in the corner waiting for his chance to pounce, and James Dolan drunkenly crashing the party and demanding a one-on-one date. In reality, it will probably be more like Weekend at Bernie’s – NBA executives carrying around their dashed hopes for a transcendent superstar like a dead body wearing sunglasses and a track suit.

Miami Heat v Toronto Raptors: NBA Eastern Conference semi-final – live!

7.59pm BST

Prediction time

I am really, really hoping for a Heat/Cavaliers Eastern Conference Finals, something which I vaguely predicted before the season started. For that reason alone, I’m going to have to predict that the Raptors pull off the victory just because the only constant in this series has been that whatever would annoy me the most is what ends up happening. So, the Heat by like 8-10 points.

7.51pm BST

So, what’s the perfect metaphor for this Heat/Raptors series so far, you may ask? Well, so far it’s been this moment where Dwyane Wade’s layup just got stuck on the rim rather than going in.

Dwyane Wade sorry for anthem flap as Heat beat Raptors in overtime

Dwyane Wade was the first Miami Heat player to line up for the playing of O Canada on Monday night.

The Heat guard apologized Monday to anyone who was offended by his actions before Saturday’s Toronto-Miami matchup, when he took a few extra warm-up shots at the beginning of the singing of the Canadian national anthem. Video showed Wade continued his pregame routine for about 20 seconds before he took his spot in line with the rest of his team-mates.

Canada is mad as hell at Dwyane Wade, America, and we might not take it anymore

The Miami Heat star’s antics during the national anthem were just the latest sign of US disrespect for Canada. And if you expect us to roll over and take it, you’re probably right

Oh, you’ve done it now, America.

Specifically, Dwyane Wayne has done it. On Saturday, Wade made international headlines before Game 3 of the NBA playoff series between his Miami Heat and the Toronto Raptors when he continued to take warm-up shots during the playing of the Canadian national anthem. And now, America, all of you will pay. By standing idly by as one of your own blatantly disrespected our anthem, you have left an entire nation feeling mildly vexed.

‘Respect the anthem’: Canadians fume at Dwyane Wade’s pre-game routine

  • Miami Heat star shown warming up during Canadian anthem
  • NBA All-Star denies disrespect during playoffs

Dwyane Wade’s pre-game routine has sparked a bit of an international incident.

The Miami star has been the subject of some anger on social media after video showed him taking a few extra warm-up shots as the Canadian national anthem was being performed before Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semi-finals against Toronto on Saturday. It was enough for John Tory, Toronto’s mayor, to give his opinion:

Kyle Lowry shakes off playoffs struggles to lead Raptors past Heat

  • Toronto Raptors 95-91 Miami Heat
  • Toronto lead series 2-1 with Game 4 due in Miami

Kyle Lowry got his game back at the perfect time for the Toronto Raptors. And the Miami Heat are in all kinds of trouble.

Shaking off epic playoff struggles, Lowry scored 33 points — including five straight to break a late tie — in a duel with Dwyane Wade to lift the Raptors to a 95-91 victory over the Heat on Saturday night in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series. The Raptors lead the series 2-1. Game 4 is in Miami on Monday night.

NBA playoffs finally heat up after Waiters’ shove and Lowry’s miracle heave

With Lowry’s half-court buzzer-beater, the Warriors’ stunning comeback and the frantic end to Spurs-Thunder, the second round of the playoffs has already provided more memorable moments than the first

Over 48 hours, the NBA postseason gave us: teams coming back from double-digit deficits, a game-tying buzzer-beater from half-court – and one of the most confounding final sequences in basketball history. In these four games, the second round of the playoffs might have already given fans as much entertainment value as the entire first round. (Granted, that may not have been a difficult task.)

Last night, the Golden State Warriors, still playing without Stephen Curry, came back to beat the Portland Trail Blazers 110-99 despite being down bys 17 points in the first half. In the fourth quarter, the Warriors went on a 9-0 run to tie the game and went on to stifle the Trail Blazers’ offense and win by a comfortable margin. The Warriors now have a 2-0 lead over the Trail Blazers, who had to have felt like they lost their best chance at making this a series.

Stephen Curry-less Warriors rampage into second round of NBA playoffs

Klay Thompson knew Golden State had to come together, that every player needed to raise his game with Stephen Curry sidelined. “None of us can do it alone,” Thompson had insisted hours earlier.

Thompson did his part, scoring 27 points with seven three-pointers as the Warriors rolled into the second round of the playoffs without their injured superstar, thoroughly embarrassing the Houston Rockets 114-81 on Wednesday night in Game 5.
