Manchester United expect England to ease Marcus Rashford’s workload

• Striker could be excused World Cup duty against Lithuania
• Rashford’s absence dependent on England beating Slovenia

Manchester United are hopeful Marcus Rashford will be spared involvement in England’s match against Lithuania on Sunday if World Cup qualification has already been secured.

Victory over Slovenia at Wembley on Thursday will book England’s place at the tournament in Russia next summer, with Rashford expected to line up on the left of an attack-minded selection which could also see Raheem Sterling recalled after recent impressive performances for Manchester City. A win will render the final qualifier in Vilnius meaningless and in that scenario José Mourinho is understood to be keen to see Rashford rested.

Marcus Rashford stays grounded but is hoping to propel England to Russia

The Manchester United teenager has let nothing faze him in a remarkable two years and helping the country to a World Cup is next on his agenda

As Marcus Rashford stretched out his limbs on one of the white leather seats at St George’s Park, the great young hope of English football stopped for a moment to consider how life had changed since those days when even his team-mates at Manchester United, among them Wayne Rooney, had to double-check his name on the club’s training pitches.

At 19, Rashford is now one of the more recognisable faces of the Premier League and the rising star of a renascent United side. Yet it is not even two years ago that he could probably have walked along Deansgate without being recognised. “My mum used to work in a bookies,” he said, “and my brother used to be a personal trainer. But my brothers just look after me now.” And his mum? Rashford’s boyish smile was a brief reminder that this strapping six‑footer sitting is still, lest it be forgotten, a teenager for a few more weeks. “My mum relaxes now,” he said.

Manchester United and Marcus Rashford allow Burton little consolation

Manchester United swatted Burton Albion aside in what is becoming familiar fashion this season. Their fourth four-goal haul of the season made it a total of 24 in eight outings in all competitions, as they began their defence of the League Cup.

José Mourinho had said United would be taking the competition seriously and by the close there was no disputing they had done so. Marcus Rashford scored twice and terrorised Burton to be the top performer on the night and Mourinho, the only current manager in the four top divisions who has previously claimed the trophy, may fancy his chances of doing so for a fifth time.

Gareth Southgate praises Marcus Rashford and Manchester United

• Forward’s career development was identified by England with his club
• ‘United prepare their players well, which is why they end up the way they do’

Gareth Southgate has praised Marcus Rashford’s growing maturity and believes England are reaping the benefits from a clear career pathway, identified in conjunction with the coaching staff at Manchester United, aimed at tapping into the striker’s immense potential.

Rashford gained his 11th cap against Slovakia on Monday, making his third start for the senior side, and recovered from an early defensive error to score his first Wembley goal and move England to within two points of qualification for the World Cup. Those discussions with United began two seasons ago when Southgate was in charge of the under-21s. The England set-up spoke at length with the former Wales forward Ryan Giggs, then Louis van Gaal’s assistant at Old Trafford, over how best to maintain the teenager’s development.
