Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City hark back to Pellegrini era for bruising derby | Barney Ronay

Manuel Pellegrini’s old players, a collection Guardiola has spent most of the season trying to move on from, were to the fore with the endgame on the line

At times during a frazzled, occasionally surly first season Pep Guardiola has looked a little culture-shocked, a man chafing at the edge of things. It has been an uncomfortable embrace, with a sense of a man half-in half-out of the door, pretending to like the tea, smiling politely, but still vaguely scandalised by the raggedness, the physicality, the lack of order.

Well, this was a bit more like it. On a tight, bruising night at the Etihad Stadium, with the season’s endgame on the line, Guardiola oversaw what must be the least Pep-ish Manchester City performance of his short time here.

On the wall behind the 62-year-old hangs a miniature white pitch which features named magnetic figures denoting his squad, Sergio Agüero, Wilfried Bony and Kelechi Iheanacho heading the formation.

May the fourth be with you: United and City in final-day battle of Manchester | Paul Wilson

The two Manchester giants are discovering you cannot be a bona fide Champions League contender if you are scrabbling around for qualification on the final day – they have some catching up to do

The last day of the Premier League season confirms a power shift has finally taken place. The Midlands is now the centre of attention, something not many observers imagined they would live to see, with Tottenham and Arsenal well represented for a change as north London fills the next two automatic Champions League qualification slots. The two Manchester clubs, like bald men fighting over a comb, are now reduced to a tussle over who finishes in fourth place, the one with the extra qualifying round.

Considering the financial resources at their disposal this is undeniable underachievement. Manuel Pellegrini can spout all the statistics he likes, just as Louis van Gaal can blame injuries and bad luck, but the two clubs have never been wealthier yet this season is going to be the first in Premier League history without either of them in the top three.
