Croatian prosecutors have launched an investigation into suspected perjury against Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric on on suspicion of him giving false testimony in a criminal trial about his financial deals with a former Dinamo Zagreb director charged with embezzlement and tax fraud. If charged and found guilty, he could face up to five years in prison.

With a deep – and deeply worrying – divide back home that transcends football, Ante Cacic has forged a team full of outstanding individuals with a clear strategy, playing to its strengths

There have been banners on bridges, flyovers, skyscrapers and ancient city walls, with messages raging from “You are the pride of Croatia” to “By God’s will, you’ll lose everything” and “Stop the mafia”. There was moral outrage, lynch mentality and media strife in the aftermath of the Saint-Étienne incidents, where fans lit flares and threw them on the pitch before starting a scuffle among themselves.

Some commentators have denounced the troublemakers as “unpatriotic” and “enemies of the state”. Others have tried to put things into perspective by saying the riots were a desperate attempt to bring international attention to the sad state of things in domestic football, whose leaders, Zdravko Mamic and Damir Vrbanovic, are charged with involvement in organised crime and tax evasion. They have denied wrongdoing.

Luka Modric’s stunning winner against Turkey came after the midfielder admitted to one of his Croatia team-mates he felt more pressure playing for his country than for Real Madrid in two Champions League finals.

Modric’s 25-yard volley secured victory in their opening Group D match in Paris on Sunday. Before the kick-off, he told Vedran Corluka the expectation to perform meant he was more relaxed in last month’s triumphant European Cup final against Atlético Madrid, as well as in the 2014 final, when Real also defeated their city rivals.
