Hull City equaliser denies John Terry a winning start with Aston Villa

John Terry presumably was not labouring under the assumption he had signed up for a leisurely stroll into retirement when he joined Aston Villa, but any faint notion life in the Championship will be easy, or even pleasurable, was dispelled on Saturday. His new side’s draw with Hull City was a broadly disjointed affair with occasional moments of quality and frequent spells of frustration. So, a fairly appropriate introduction to the Championship, then.

From John Terry at Villa to vegan pies and Harry Kewell the manager there are fresh stories aplenty when the English Football League kicks off on Friday

Having brought down the curtain on 22 glorious years at Chelsea with that 26th-minute substitution, John Terry decided to prolong his career by dropping down a level. After 30 years, I’m boycotting Aston Villa. Why? John Terry’s past racist language | Steve Bloomfield

In any other workplace Terry would have lost his job after the 2011 abuse of Anton Ferdinand, but not in football. So as long as he is a Villan, I’m not

• Steve Bloomfield is deputy editor of Prospect

I became an Aston Villa fan by chance. My dad, who grew up in north London, is an Arsenal fan, but because we lived in Birmingham he thought I should support a local team.

Villa had just been promoted to the first division, while Birmingham City still languished in the second, so he took me to Villa Park. My first match was a 1-1 draw with Liverpool in September 1988 – we sat on wooden benches at the front of the Trinity Road stand, close enough to the sidelines to hear the yells of the coaching staff and the thuds and grunts of the players. We went several times a year and when I turned 13 I bought a season ticket.

John Terry has plenty to prove at Aston Villa after leaving Chelsea comfort zone | Stuart James

The former Chelsea captain is aware of his public image but is eager to prove himself as a player and personality by leading Villa back to the top flight

John Terry needed no reminding of the day when he was booed off by Aston Villa supporters while lying on a stretcher. It was 11 May 2013, and has gone down in the history books as the game when Frank Lampard became Chelsea’s all‑time leading goalscorer. For the visiting captain, however, it was a less enjoyable experience. “I think the [chant] was ‘let him die’,” Terry said, laughing while wearing his new Villa tracksuit.

Outside of Stamford Bridge, where Terry spent 22 years and racked up more than 700 appearances, there have been plenty of insults thrown at the central defender over the years. Villa Park, where Terry will be playing next season after signing a one-year contract with the Championship club, was no different in that respect. “Quite hostile” is how Terry described his memories of playing at the ground. “I’ve been on the receiving end of that [atmosphere] and thrived on it,” he added.

John Terry weighs up Aston Villa move as he waits on Premier League interest

• Terry has offer from Villa which could be worth more than £4m a year

John Terry is weighing up an offer to extend his career with Aston Villa in the Championship, but anticipates top-flight clubs proposing terms over the next few weeks as he prepares for life away from Chelsea.

The former England captain returned to the Premier League champions’ training base at Cobham this week to maintain his fitness before the expiry of his last contract at the club on 30 June. The 36-year-old, who ultimately wants to move into management, is determined to play on and has received a lucrative offer from Villa which, after bonuses and incentives, could be worth more than £4m a year.

Departing John Terry urges Chelsea to spend big on their squad

The former captain of many triumphs said the club need to invest heavily in the transfer market to compete in the Champions League

First rewind almost eight years to the day and John Terry had stood confronted by massed ranks of dictaphone wielding media, deep in the bowels of Wembley stadium, contemplating what Chelsea must do next. The names that had tripped off his tongue that afternoon were David Villa and Franck Ribéry, “the kind of players we want to attract, the best out there”, with the senior pros sensing the current crop might fall marginally short when it came to Europe.

A year on and, with the club having recruited only Yuri Zhirkov of note in the interim, the captain’s rhetoric remained steadfast. “The big four need to strengthen next year because everyone’s become closer,” he had said before the successful defence of the FA Cup which would complete Carlo Ancelotti’s Double in his first season in charge. The established quartet were coming to terms with Manchester City’s new financial strength and, this time, Chelsea would react. Ramires, David Luiz and Fernando Torres arrived over the next seven months for a combined £90m, an eye-watering outlay at the time. Two years later the team would lift the European Cup in Munich.
