Yes, it’s a Smashing Pumpkins song, but it’s also the year Houston made a bit of underdog playoff magic.

If you’ve been reading about this game, chances are you’ve run into a blurb or two about the time that the dearly departed Houston Oilers, playing without their starting quarterback, Dan Pastorini, and their powerhouse running back Earl Campbell, managed to pick off San Diego’s Dan Fouts five times en-route to a surprising 17-14 win over the Chargers.

NFL divisional round: the teams best placed to score an upset

The four games this weekend look like home bankers, but history suggests at least one visiting team will win – and the Steelers perhaps have the best chance

Welcome to what the NFL calls the divisional round of the playoffs, where four teams that won a wildcard playoff game hit the road to tangle with a team that posted a better record during the regular season and thereby got a weekend off. Decks appear stacked.

NFL playoff predictions: Russell Wilson to lead Seahawks to victory over Lions

The regular season’s Pick Six contest is done and dusted, and now Pick the Playoffs can begin. This week, go for Houston, Seattle, Pittsburgh and Green Bay

For NFL teams, the playoffs represent the culmination of months of hard graft. But here on the Guardian sport blog, they simply represent a fresh start. Our regular season Pick Six contest is at an end, but now it is time for the Pick the Playoffs to begin.

First, though, we must crown our regular season champion. In past years, this has often been a close-run thing, but this time it was not at all; castigers has led the way for weeks and held off one final late push from the chasing pack to finish two points clear in first place. Let’s have everyone on their feet to whoop, holler, and applaud. And maybe leave a nice congratulatory message in the comments section below.

The AFC’s weak wildcard round could provide the underdog QB we need

There are plenty of underwhelming quarterbacks lining up this weekend but that could provide some upsets to liven up the playoffs

A few days before the start of Christmas and Hanukkah signalled the merciful end to 2016, it was announced that a spring developmental football league was slated to debut in April. Unaffiliated with the NFL, the four-team league will feature free agent players instructed by experienced coaches, and is designed to give fringe players a chance to open some eyes and latch on to NFL teams.

But the NFL is not one to let any competitor leagues pop up unopposed, so this Saturday and Sunday we will see the debut of the NFL’s own developmental league, one they’re calling “the AFC wildcard round”. Over one magical weekend, football fans will be treated to two AFC playoff games featuring three of the following five men at quarterback: Connor Cook, Matt McGloin, Tom Savage, Brock Osweiler and Matt Moore. These are players you expect to see in the second half of preseason contests, not under center on the road to the Super Bowl. We’re getting exhibition names in playoff games. Don’t pretend you’re not excited.

KJ Dillon’s $16,255 dinner bill hints at pernicious side of NFL hazing culture

Twitter had a laugh when the Texans rookie shared a dinner bill he was made to pay, but the legacy of athletes blowing their fortunes is anything but funny

Here’s what passes for a good time in the NFL. A group of veteran players gather up an unsuspecting rookie and take him out to dinner. Over the next few hours they order heaping slabs of steak and bottle upon bottle of wine from the restaurant’s secret storage chest. After, they wash it all down with a couple bottles of Dom Perignon.

When the bill arrives they propose a game. How about a little credit card roulette? Everyone throws their card in a hat and the waiter or waitress is asked to close their eyes then pull out a card. This is “the winner,” the one stuck with the check. Of course the game is rigged to be sure the rookie’s card will be selected. The bill makes his heart sink.
