Harry Redknapp sacked by Birmingham City after 13 games

• Birmingham have won two out of 10 games in all competitions
• Redknapp, 70, dismissed after 3-1 home defeat to Preston

Birmingham City sacked Harry Redknapp on Saturday evening after a 3-1 home defeat to Preston North End left the Championship club second-bottom of the table. It was Birmingham’s sixth straight defeat in all competitions and they have won one game since the start of the season. It was the former Tottenham manager’s 13th game in charge.

The 70-year-old Redknapp took over on a temporary basis at St Andrew’s with three games remaining last season after Gianfranco Zola’s resignation. Having guided the club to safety on the final day of the campaign – City won their last two games – Redknapp signed a one-year contract in May.

Harry Redknapp’s Birmingham undone by Aston Villa’s Gabriel Agbonlahor

Gabriel Agbonlahor has come to resemble something of a relic at Villa Park in recent times, a vague reminder of better times when he and Aston Villa shared exhilarating aspirations towards the top end of the Premier League and international recognition. On Sunday, recharged by the incentive of attempting to help relegate Birmingham City, the club’s highest Premier League scorer rolled back the years to claim his first goal in more than a year to win a frenetic derby.

Harry Redknapp, charged with the three-game mission of keeping Birmingham in the Championship, was left strolling around the visitors’ dugout, hands slipping in and out of his designer suit pockets, as he watched his newly inherited players give a creditable display that looked set fair to gain a valuable point before the former England striker rose from the bench to do what he does best.

Aston Villa v Birmingham City: Championship – live!

12.50pm BST

Well, it’s not been a classic encounter. Birmingham have, by common consensus, been slightly the better team, but that’s not saying a great deal. A possible concern for them was Jutkiewicz sitting down in the centre circle at the break, and he received some treatment before limping off down the tunnel.

12.48pm BST

Peeeeeeeeeeeep.

Harry Redknapp: I was managing Tony McCoy’s XI, now I have a Midlands derby

Birmingham’s manager for next three games starts at Aston Villa on Sunday and admits he needs at least a win, and quickly

One thing has tended to lead to another at Birmingham City this season and after the unwarranted sacking of Gary Rowett then the ill-advised decision to bring in Gianfranco Zola, there was a certain inevitablity about Harry Redknapp being introduced to his new public in the St Andrew’s stadium’s Jasper Carrott suite.

At 70, Redknapp is two years younger than Birmingham’s resident comedian, though many feel he too should be looking back on his best days instead of continuing to take his act on the road. Carrott still gets laughs, to be fair, while for Redknapp the amusement might not last much longer if he cannot extricate Birmingham from their predicament, but they are not down yet and confidence is always a great help in this sort of situation.

The 2016 Rusties: Guardian Australia’s alternative sporting awards

Who won the the Todd Carney cup for bad publicity? How about the Mile Jedinak golden microphone for unfortunate gaffes? And then there’s Warnie … Your host Russell Jackson hands out the prizes

It was a bumper year of on-field and off-field misbehaviour in the NRL, with incidents including but not limited to a player being knocked out with a fire poker at a charity party (admit it, nobody had that on their NRL player behaviour bingo card), a positive cocaine test, fraud squad raids, match-fixing allegations, coin toss deceit (where will it end?), the Corey Norman/MDMA/muscle relaxant/Star Casino quadrella (we’re actually leaving out a few items there, too), and Junior Paulo disguising himself as a third-grade player, which we thought was great fun.
