Football transfer rumours: Eden Hazard to Real Madrid next summer?

Today’s fluff is talking in its sleep at night

According to Don Balón, Zinedine Zidane has his greedy eye on Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, who could be part of a wide-scale rebuilding project at the end of this season if it looks like Real Madrid’s current squad – and in particular their “BBC” attacking trident – are on a downward slope. David de Gea (inevitably), Paulo Dybala and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are also mentioned, with the newspaper suggesting that “if Real’s performance is sub-optimal over this campaign, after two quiet transfer windows we could see a very busy summer in 2018”, adding that Zidane has given the current side until Christmas to impress him, after which he will begin serious planning for next season.

There is news, though, about David de Gea’s immediate future. In April his £3.85m home was put up for sale (not by De Gea himself, mind – he was only renting) sparking rumours that he was about to leave Manchester for Madrid. Then in June, after the sale of the property was completed and just in time for the transfer window, he moved out. Now, three weeks after that window ended without an outbound transfer, he has moved into a new place just 500 yards from the first, a development the Sun has interpreted as “hinting at a long-term Manchester United stay”.

Wolfsburg hope to rouse themselves for Real Madrid after season of freefall | Raphael Honigstein

Wolfsburg have struggled horribly since selling Kevin de Bruyne and though the corporate-backed club’s plight has received scant sympathy their slump has still been alarming

Now that the Bundesliga can officially boast THE TIGHTEST TITLE-RACE IN EUROPE’S BIG FIVE LEAGUES™, scores of football fans worldwide will no longer be deprived of the joys of German club football by insisting on a real competition between first and second in the table. No boring procession by Juventus, PSG, Barcelona and Leicester City to the championship here: this season, unlike others, is guaranteed to go on all the way into May!

So welcome, dear millions. It’s good to have you, finally. But please be advised: all is not as initially advertised. The team who were widely tipped to make life difficult for Bayern Munich and exciting for everyone else as the new, coming force in the German top flight, for example, have not lived up to their billing. Far from pushing on after winning the German Cup and destroying Pep Guardiola’s side 4-1 in January last year, VfL Wolfsburg have gone six steps backwards. A 3-0 away defeat by Bayer Leverkusen on Friday night – so poor that Süddeutsche Zeitung felt “it could amount to a new Volkswagen scandal” – left Dieter Hecking’s men in eighth spot in the table and “in the basement, mood-wise” (NDR), just in time for the biggest game in the club’s history, against Real Madrid in the Champions League. “With that sort of performance, it won’t be very titillating on Wednesday night,” predicted Hecking grimly. Unless Cristiano Ronaldo piques interest on the post-game changing room photo, possibly.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored for Borussia Dortmund as they laboured to a 1-0 win over the bottom side, Hannover, and provisionally cut Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga lead to five points.

Bayern Munich’s win at Hannover overshadowed by Guardiola speculation

Bayern Munich opened up an eight-point lead in the Bundesliga at the start of the German season’s one-month winter break after beating Hannover 1-0 amid mounting speculation over the future of Pep Guardiola.

With more than half a dozen players missing through injury, Bayern, whose near-flawless first half to the campaign has featured 15 wins and just one defeat in their 17 games, needed a Thomas Müller penalty to prevail as second-placed Borussia Dortmund conceded two late goals in a surprise 2-1 defeat at Köln.

Clockwatch: Manchester United v Norwich City, Premier League updates and more – live!

2.02pm GMT

The slow death of José Mourinho’s second Chelsea reign has cast a shadow over the Premier League season. If not quite the headline, it’s been a diverting sideshow – a sort of footballing Xtra Factor, with desperation, paranoia and mediocrity to match. Chelsea face Sunderland at 3pm with new interim boss Guus Hiddink in the stands. Appropriately enough, you can follow it separately here.

Over here, we’ll focus on the big show, not the sideshow, as the lights flicker back on over the title race, which – like many a dark, neglected corner – has been commandeered by foxes. Leicester can guarantee they’ll be top of the tree on Christmas Day if they win at Everton, and with Arsenal playing Manchester City on Monday, it could be by a handsome margin.

1.46pm GMT

There’s plenty – starting in Germany, where Bayern face Hannover before Pep faces the press, with Carlo Ancelotti reportedly set to fill his shiny shoes. Also in the Bundesliga, second-placed Dortmund travel to Cologne, which must be nice this time of year. In Spain, Gary Neville takes charge of his first home league game for Valencia against Getafe at 3pm. In France, fourth placed Caen welcome leaders PSG, just the 18 points ahead of them, at 4pm.

In the Championship, Derby and Hull will look to overtake second-placed Brighton, who are currently 3-0 down at home to Boro. They go to Ipswich and Rotherham respectively. There’s also Bolton v Fulham, Brentford v Huddersfield, Bristol City v QPR, Burnley v Charlton and Nottingham Forest v MK Dons ruining the B theme.

Hanover part company with manager Tayfun Korkut as club battle relegation

• Hanover have not won in 13 matches and face relegation
• Club hope to announce new manager before next match
Tuchel to replace Klopp as Borussia Dortmund’s manager

Hanover 96 have parted ways with their coach Tayfun Korkut, two days after a 4-0 defeat by Bayern Leverkusen. The defeat extended their winless run to 13 games and left them fighting for Bundesliga survival with five matches remaining.

Korkut joined in January 2014 and helped the side to avoid relegation last season but their recent run of woeful form means the side have failed to win since mid-December and they sit two points above the relegation playoff spot in 15th place.
