Tom Lawrence stunner earns Wales vital World Cup qualifying win in Georgia

It is not quite a case of all roads point to Russia for Wales, but the path to the World Cup finals tournament next summer has certainly become a little clearer. A third successive qualification victory, courtesy of Tom Lawrence’s first goal for his country, means that another win against the Republic of Ireland in Cardiff on Monday night will all but guarantee a place in the World Cup play‑offs next month.

That will be easier said than done, yet all that matters for now is that Chris Coleman and his players have emerged from another awkward fixture with three points and proved in the process that they are capable of winning matches without Gareth Bale. This is the first time Wales have managed to do that in four years, which says much about the Real Madrid forward’s influence on a team that seems to have found momentum in this qualification campaign at just the right time.

Georgia v Wales: World Cup qualifier – live!

9.52am BST

Hello. If their attempts at reaching a first World Cup finals since 1958 have taught Wales anything, it’s not to get too far ahead of themselves, lest their hopes and dreams come thudding straight back at them like a last-minute Paul Bodin penalty. His team might have been semi-finalists at last year’s Euros, but Chris Coleman doesn’t mind the boredom of taking each game as it comes. Four points from their final two matches in Group D, that’s all Wales need to secure their play-off spot, an exciting thought. But Wales aren’t looking that far forward yet. They aren’t even thinking about what promises to be a dramatic occasion when the Republic of Ireland visit Cardiff on Monday night. Not when they’ve got to confront Georgia in Tblisi first.

It won’t be easy for Wales this evening – and not just because they’re missing the injured Gareth Bale, whose absence will be keenly felt even it presents Aaron Ramsey with an opportunity to step up to the plate. As Coleman’s acknowledged, Georgia are better than their Fifa ranking of 103 in the world. “They’ve got imagination, they create chances and they play risk football,” the Wales manager said yesterday, thinking back to that tricky 1-1 home draw with Georgia last year. Ireland have already been held in Tblisi and the threat posed to Welsh qualification hopes by Kakhaber Tskhadadze’s men should not be taken lightly. Falter here and Wales will be newly vulnerable; Ireland, a point back in third place, expect to beat Moldova at home later in the evening. Tense times.

Wales’s Dave Edwards: ‘I’ll always put the team ahead of myself’

The Reading midfielder is ready to step into Gareth Bale’s shoes for the World Cup qualifier in Georgia but admits Ben Woodburn already has a strong case

Dave Edwards is prepared for what will come his way in Georgia on Friday if the Reading midfielder turns out to be the man asked to take the place of the most famous footballer in Wales. “Friends always take the mick out of me when it says ‘Edwards has come in to replace Bale’,” the 31-year-old says, laughing. “What a let-down when you see that come across Sky Sports News.”

Self-deprecating and down to earth, Edwards is a loyal servant to Wales. He talks about being “happy to step in and give my absolute all” if Chris Coleman names him in his starting XI for the World Cup qualifier in Tbilisi, yet also explains why he will have no qualms if the manager decides to look elsewhere, including in the direction of the 17-year-old Ben Woodburn.

Republic of Ireland’s Martin O’Neill unhappy with first half against Georgia – video

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill says his side were simply not good enough in the first half during their 1-1 draw away to Georgia in World Cup qualifying, and says his team will have to be at their best against Serbia on Tuesday. Shane Duffy header helps Republic of Ireland to hard-fought draw in Georgia

Shane Duffy’s first senior international goal was enough only to claim a point as the Republic of Ireland rode their luck in Georgia.

Duffy headed the visitors into a fourth-minute lead, but they were unable to capitalise as Georgia hit back in determined fashion. They levelled 11 minutes before the break through Valeri Kazaishvili and enjoyed much the better of the game for long periods.

NBA arena discriminated against black artists such as Drake, claims lawsuit

  • Former security chief at Atlanta Hawks sues after his dismissal
  • Lawsuit claims white acts such as Radiohead given preferential treatment

A former security manager at the arena where the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks play says white entertainers performing there were allowed to bypass security measures while similar requests by black entertainers were denied.

Alleging racial discrimination, Samuel Hayes filed a federal lawsuit on Monday against Atlanta Hawks LLC, which operates the arena. The lawsuit says Hayes was fired because he’s black and because he complained about security measures that he says were selectively enforced based on race. The Hawks hired Hayes in August to work as manager of security operations at Philips Arena and for the team, the lawsuit says. He was fired on 28 April.

Jonathan Walters warns Ireland are in no-win situation against Moldova

• Attacker likens World Cup qualifier to cup ties with lower-league clubs
• Martin O’Neill short of midfield options after Robbie Brady’s concussion

The Republic of Ireland rarely tend to do things the easy way. Martin O’Neill’s team may be able to put it up to some of the world’s best, as Italy and France will attest to following the European Championship, but too often they struggle against the lesser teams.

That age-old problem was obvious against Georgia, a team sandwiched between Thailand and Puerto Rico in Fifa’s rankings, on Thursday and, before the trip to Moldova on Sunday, Jonathan Walters said that such fixtures are no-win situations.

Republic of Ireland win ugly but Robbie Brady injury mars result against Georgia

This was never going to be one for the purists and there were times, especially in the first half, when the Republic of Ireland seemed incapable of stringing more than two passes together. However, Séamus Coleman’s first international goal, on his 40th appearance, was sufficient to earn Martin O’Neill’s team their opening win of the qualifying campaign against a battling Georgia.
