Former England skipper now has $500m investment in place, but still needs local approval on the stadium plot required to secure MLS franchise

David Beckham’s protracted bid to bring a Major League Soccer team to Miami now rests on the fate of a small plot of disused, contaminated, county-owned land.

Tim Leiweke, Beckham’s top negotiator, this week told residents in the Overtown district where it plans to build a 25,000-seat arena “this is the last chance to get a stadium or soccer team”.

José Fernández: a smiling star whose death leaves baseball bereft

The Marlins pitcher is dead at the age of 24. It is a tragedy made all the more painful after the adversity he had overcome in his short life

This is the year my son fell in love with baseball and for reasons that are still unclear he declared the Miami Marlins his second-favorite team. He often wears a black Marlins shirt to school with orange pants to match the team’s colors. And each night when we sit in front of the television to watch an hour of baseball before bedtime it is usually the Marlins we see. The most recent Marlins game we watched together was last Tuesday night when the team’s best pitcher José Fernández sliced through the Washington Nationals, striking out 12 on his way to a 1-0 victory.

Meadowlark Lemon obituary

Undisputed star of the Harlem Globetrotters, the team that brought barnstorming basketball as entertainment to the world

Meadowlark Lemon, who has died aged 83, was billed as the Clown Prince of Basketball, but deserved to be called its king. During the almost 25 years that he was the undisputed star of the Harlem Globetrotters, the most successful barnstorming sports outfit in history, they reached the zenith of their worldwide popularity.

The Globetrotters lived up to their name; for decades the world learned basketball from their antics. Crowds in more than 100 countries saw Lemon at the centre of the team’s “Magic Circle”, performing tricks with the basketball to the whistled strains of their signature tune, Sweet Georgia Brown. He embarrassed referees, tormented opponents, showered fans with a bucket of confetti masquerading as water, and sunk half-court baskets with his old-fashioned hook shot. Each stunt was completed with a cackling, trash-talking strut, as if he were entertaining himself as much as the fans.

Former FSU quarterback De’Andre Johnson says sorry for punching woman

  • Appears on Good Morning America with Michael Strahan
  • School president warns players over behavior

On Tuesday, former Florida State quarterback De’Andre Johnson said he was sorry.

This was, of course, more than two weeks after he punched a woman in a Tallahassee bar, after his attorney tried to spin surveillance camera evidence of this punch by saying he was the target of a racial epithet, and after he was charged with misdemeanor battery and was kicked off the team. Left without a school, a place to play football and facing the scorn of a nation, Johnson took the only refuge left: he went on TV and apologized.
