It would be nice to stay clear of relegation and have a comfortable season with a few big wins to keep us going. I’d like a number of our younger players to establish themselves here rather than being bought by Premier League clubs.

What is pre-season training really like? I’ve done it for 18 years and still love it

Being watched, assessed and rated for each gut-busting run is exhausting but the sense of satisfaction after training far outweighs the aches in my muscles

By Mark Roberts for These Football Times, part of the Guardian Sport Network

I was travelling back from the airport with my family when the radio informed me it was officially the first day of summer. The irony was that mine had already come to a close. There will be no more holidays for me until next May. I’m back at work as a professional footballer and pre-season No18 is underway.

It’s crazy to think that my preparations for the new campaign started when some international players had not yet to fulfilled their commitments from last season. It’s the final day in League One on Sunday, starting at noon, and it’s set up nicely: three teams eyeing the last play-off spot, four trying to avoid relegation, and either Bolton or Fleetwood going up with champions Sheffield United. Expect angst.

Who’ll land second place, then? Bolton have the edge. They’re second on 83 points (GD29) and home to the relaxed, mid-table Peterborough, live on TV. Fleetwood (third, 81 points, GD21) play Port Vale at home – with Vale battling the drop.

Uwe Rösler: ‘English football is fantastic – wow. But you also have a dark side’

Former Manchester City striker is working wonders at Fleetwood but feels too many clubs’ structures are flawed, leaving talented managers on the scrapheap

Shortly before Uwe Rösler accepted an offer on the eve of this season to become the Fleetwood Town manager, the German signed up for a masters degree in sporting directorship at Manchester Metropolitan University, eager to learn more about leadership and the role that he believes can help to solve English football’s “dark side”.

An affable and intelligent man, Rösler has a huge amount of affection for the English game and talks with a mixture of pride and excitement about scoring goals for Manchester City at Maine Road, the special atmosphere at grounds up and down the country, and the part that everyone at Fleetwood is playing in their record-breaking season in League One. Yet the 48-year-old also sounds dismayed at the way so many clubs operate, in particular in the Championship, where he has personal experience of the managerial merry-go-round that has been in full swing once again this season.
