When the hot blood courses through the system of Emmanuel Adebayor, there has long been the acceptance the consequences can be explosive, not least from the man himself. The Crystal Palace striker has spent almost 10 years in the English game, or in exile from it, and it is safe to say that it has been emotional.

There has been the spectacular finishing that has helped him to 97 Premier League goals – only Wayne Rooney and Jermain Defoe, of active players, have more – and the deep-rooted sense that here is a dangerman with the capacity to make the adrenaline surge.

• Adebayor says his ‘relationship with Mauricio Pochettino was beautiful’

Emmanuel Adebayor has hit out at Daniel Levy, insisting that he did not have a good relationship with the Tottenham Hotspur chairman who “made everything complicated” for the striker when he was at the club.

Emmanuel Adebayor is ‘mentor Connor Wickham will really gain from’

• Crystal Palace’s Alan Pardew: Ade can help Connor grow up as centre-forward
• Swansea City frustrated as they pay set-piece price again in 1-1 draw

Emmanuel Adebayor has been described as many things over the years but “a mentor” is probably a new one on most people. Alan Pardew, however, sees Adebayor fulfilling that role over the remainder of the season as he outlined his master plan for the 31-year-old to score the goals to reignite Crystal Palace’s season while also helping Connor Wickham to “grow up” as a centre-forward.

It sounds like a leap of faith on Pardew’s part, given what a complex and at times controversial figure Adebayor has been during a colourful decade spent in English football, yet a record of 96 goals in 232 league games suggests that the Togolese knows how to finish and lead the line.

Emmanuel Adebayor’s eagerness to stay fit during his five-month exile from the professional game saw him organising competitive matches on a whim back in Togo to ensure he was in a proper condition to return to the Premier League this month.

The former Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur striker, who had been without a club since cancelling his contract with Spurs in September, came off the bench for Crystal Palace on Tuesday but was unable to prevent his new side slipping to a fifth successive Premier League defeat. He splits opinion and often leaves via the back door but Adebayor’s undoubted quality should put Palace back on track
