Ellie Simmonds steals the show on golden night for British swimmers

• 21-year-old wins fifth Paralympic gold and breaks SM6 200m medley record
• Victories also for Sascha Kindred and Susannah Rodgers

On a night of three golds in the pool for ParalympicsGB Ellie Simmonds stole the show by becoming the first SM6 swimmer to race below three minutes in the 200m medley. After an F42 shot put gold for Aled Davies during the morning session of the athletics Simmonds followed Sascha Kindred’s lead by shattering the world record in the clammy Aquatics Centre. The 21-year-old, who suffers from achondroplasia dwarfism, won her fifth Paralympic gold with a time of 2min 59.81sec.

“I’m so happy that I could finally go below three minutes,” she said. “I’ve been so close and I just wanted to be the first. It was a secret target that I set myself that I’ve not told anyone, not even my coach or family. I’m so chuffed. I was so nervous before that race, I thought I was going to be sick. I don’t know what to feel but I’m so, so happy.”

Kadeena Cox completes historic Paralympic double with time trial gold

• Dame Sarah Storey’s prediction comes true as she finishes outside medals
• Hannah Cockroft is imperious on the track in defending T34 100m title

Dame Sarah Storey, who knows a thing or two about track cycling, did say that Kadeena Cox was going to smash her rivals out of the Velodrome in the C4-5 500m time trial. Tempting though it was to suspect that Storey was trying to lure her younger team-mate into a false sense of security, her prediction was spot on. By the end of Cox’s ride, it was worth a check to see if there were any bike-shaped holes in the roof of this boisterous, sweaty arena.

Over at the Olympic Stadium, Hannah Cockroft was making a successful defence of her T34 100m title, a victory that was impossible to greet with anything other than a shrug of the shoulders. Cockroft’s superiority in wheelchair racing meant that her third Paralympic gold was never in doubt.

Ellie Simmonds loses long-held 400m S6 title at IPC World Championship

• Olympic champion is beaten by 0.8sec by Ukraine’s Yelyzaveta Mereshko
• Four other British swimmers also win silver medals on opening day

Ellie Simmonds lost a long-held world title on the first day of the IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow.

The 20-year-old had to settle for silver behind Ukraine’s Yelyzaveta Mereshko in the 400m freestyle S6, an event Simmonds has won at two Paralympics and two previous world championships.
