Stan Kroenke’s abject US teams a warning things may get worse for Arsenal

Gunners fans may well despair at their club’s woes but they should be thankful they don’t support one of his teams on the other side of the Atlantic

Arsenal supporters are rightly wondering if it can get any worse for their side. Two losses in three matches to open the Premier League season, a manager in Arsène Wenger who has seemingly lost his touch and precious little done during the transfer window to improve the talent on the pitch. But if Arsenal fans are dismayed at the way the club’s majority shareholder, Stan Kroenke, runs affairs at the Emirates, a glance at his US teams offers little hope things will improve.

The metaphor that best describes Kroenke’s sports franchises is that of a dumpster fire. But, in his case, a raging trash fire isn’t a metaphor. Two years ago, before Kroenke’s NFL Rams team took on the Pittsburgh Steelers, the turf in St Louis’ Edward Jones Dome actually caught fire, delaying kickoff by nearly 30 minutes.

George Karl rips Carmelo Anthony as ‘user of people’ in new memoir

  • Longtime coach blasts Knicks star as ‘true conundrum’ in new book
  • Karl also brands Anthony a ‘user of people, addicted to the spotlight’

Longtime NBA coach George Karl blasted New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony in a memoir set to be released next month, calling the nine-times NBA all-star a “true conundrum” and a “user of people, addicted to the spotlight”.

Karl, who coached Anthony with the Denver Nuggets from January 2005 until February 2011, spared no criticism of his former charge, who in August became the first ever three-times Olympic gold medalist in men’s basketball.

Denver Nuggets’ Gary Harris: ‘Who’s my favourite American? Myself’

The NBA star on playing soccer as a boy, eating chicken wings and why his mother missed him dunk

Hi Gary. How are you? I’m great, how are you doing?

I’m good. So, you’re in London because the NBA have announced next year’s Global Games match, which will be between your Denver Nuggets and the Indiana Pacers on 12 January. First impressions of the city? It’s my first time here and I like it. It’s a pretty cool city. I like the whole vibe and everything.

One-time college superstar Jimmer Fredette still running down NBA dream

Five years after winning National Player of the Year at BYU, the sharpshooter whose game never translated to the pros has yet to give up on his NBA dream

Jimmer Fredette is eternally eager, with these wide hopeful eyes, absolutely certain there is a place for him in the NBA that it must be impossible for teams to tell him no. So yet another one has given him a chance, this time the Denver Nuggets. He has come here to pursue that opportunity, in a fading arena located a mile of parking lots and warehouses away from the glow of the Las Vegas Strip. And this seems like an apt metaphor for him now: grasping for the dazzle he once had that is now just out of reach.

This must be strange for him to run the Summer League floor with men five and six years younger, watching the next great things gaze into the future the way he did four years ago. That was when Milwaukee picked him 10th overall in the draft, immediately trading him to Sacramento where he was supposed to be the next big thing too. Back then, he was a weekly show you couldn’t miss on late-night television, the guard from Brigham Young University hitting all those impossible shots until you held your breath and imagined he couldn’t hit any more. He was a single name then. Jimmer. You didn’t need to say anything more.

2015 NBA mock draft: the Karl-Anthony Towns or Jahlil Okafor debate begins

Kentucky’s Karl-Anthony Towns and Duke’s Jahlil Okafor are likely to be the first two players chosen in the 2015 NBA draft, but who will go No1?

After last night’s lottery, every team knows where they’re picking in the 25 June draft at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. That means it’s mock draft time, a yearly tradition where basketball experts compete to see whose predictions are the least embarrassingly inaccurate.

Harden kicks LeBron below the belt – and other painful NBA moments

The Chicago Bulls lose Jimmy Butler; Russell Westbrook gets dented; the league struggles to understand Larry Sanders’ struggles; Denver Nuggets fire Brian Shaw

Welcome to a special all-pain edition of NBA five things. It wasn’t really planned to shape up as a themed column, but sometimes we can only respond to what we’re seeing, even if it’s not pleasant. You would think that the injuries would have tapered off after last week’s litany of key players facing extended absences but, then again, you would also have probably guessed that there was no way that the Chicago Bulls could have an even more depressing week than the previous one. This season has been full of surprises, albeit sometimes of the unwanted variety.

Sources who have been active in arranging care for Sanders worry that the financial security that comes with the buyout of his contract with Milwaukee for “about 40¢ on the dollar” presents a real risk that he won’t seek the treatment he, by his own admission, desperately needs and will fall into a routine of bad habits. One of these sources agrees with the characterization that surfaced in December reports that Sanders no longer wanted to play basketball.

“This is an important issue, but Larry is not the person to be the public face of it,” the source said. “He says all the right things, now he has no credibility. You have to ask, ‘Does he sincerely want treatment, or just to be left to do whatever he wants?’”
