Jonny Evans puts Northern Ireland on way to win and verge of World Cup play-off

Northern Ireland’s progress deserves wider recognition, according to Michael O’Neill, but the magnitude of their achievements is not lost on their public. Windsor Park was a raucous, bouncing and once again triumphant stage as O’Neill’s team secured second place and a probable World Cup play-off berth with a superb defeat of the Czech Republic.

Michael O’Neill says his Northern Ireland ‘greats’ deserve more respect

• Coach says current stars are worthy of place alongside Best and Blanchflower
• A point against Czech Republic on Monday night would seal second place

Michael O’Neill has said Northern Ireland boast some of the finest players in the country’s history and deserve more credit for their progress since the European Championship last summer.

O’Neill’s team welcome Czech Republic to Windsor Park on Mon needing to avoid defeat to secure second place in Group C and a possible World Cup play-off. Northern Ireland have never reached back-to-back tournaments but victory in San Marino on Friday, which stretched their winning run to a record four matches, brought qualification for Russia a step closer. The manager believes his players warrant recognition alongside those such as George Best, Pat Jennings and Danny Blanchflower for what they have delivered over the past two qualifying campaigns.

Shades of Zlatan: Patrik Schick’s £26m Juventus move caps a meteoric rise

The Czech Republic striker, who has been likened to Ibrahimovic, has flown on Juve’s jet from the Under-21 Euros to seal a transfer from Sampdoria

“Right now, Patrik doesn’t have the muscles, but you can just imagine him in two or three years,” enthused the 2003 Ballon d’Or winner Pavel Nedved this month. “He reminds me of Zlatan Ibrahimovic because he was like that when he came to Juve. He didn’t have the muscles either.”

As meteoric rises go, it is hard to beat the story of Patrik Schick. The 21-year-old Czech Republic forward was having a medal on Thursday to seal a €30m (£26.4m) transfer from Sampdoria to Nedved’s former club Juventus. Thirteen months ago he had just returned to Sparta Prague from a loan spell at Bohemians – the third-best-supported team in the Czech capital and the club where the 1976 European Championship-winning hero Antonin Panenka is the honorary president.

Barbora Strycova key as Czech Republic beat France to retain Fed Cup

• Czech Republic beat France 3-2 to win fifth Fed Cup title in six years
• Strycova and Karolina Pliskova win decisive doubles 7-5, 7-5

Long before the last point was played in Strasbourg onlookers were wondering if they might be witnessing the greatest Fed Cup final in history. By the time Karolina Pliskova punched away the final volley to clinch the doubles rubber and give the Czech Republic a 3-2 victory over France for their fifth title in six years there seemed little doubt. Barbora Strycova, her partner, called it a fairytale.

The wonder was that Pliskova could summon the energy, having earlier lost in three sets to the world No23, Caroline Garcia, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. That defeat, which left France 2-1 up with two matches left and one win away from a first title since 2003 – came less than 24 hours after the Czech had overcome Kristina Mladenovic 16-14 in the third set of the bruising opening rubber.

Filip Novak miss gives Northern Ireland useful point against Czech Republic

• Czech Republic 0-0 Northern Ireland
• Filip Novak misses open goal from seven yards out

Northern Ireland took a point from their opening World Cup qualifier as Filip Novak’s stunning miss let Michael O’Neill’s side snatch a 0-0 draw with the Czech Republic.

Two years on from a victory in Hungary which kick-started their run to the Euro 2016 finals, the good feeling accrued from featuring in France this summer evaporated somewhat with a stalemate against the equally underwhelming Czechs.
