Romelu Lukaku strikes twice more as Manchester United thrash CSKA

Manchester United have maximum points from their two Champions League outings and return home from Moscow in buoyant mood. From the first to last whistle they coasted to a win that means José Mourinho’s side have now scored 28 goals in nine outings this season.

United owed this victory to the superb Anthony Martial, who created both of Romelu Lukaku’s goals, scored a penalty and generally terrorised CSKA Moscow whenever he took possession.

Manchester United need to stay respectful at CSKA Moscow, says Mourinho

• Champions League group game will be tough, manager warns
• United travel without Fellaini, Jones and Valencia

José Mourinho believes the key to Manchester United beating CSKA Moscow in Wednesday’s Champions League game and maintaining their fine start to the season is to be dominant while staying humble and respecting the home side.

United are unbeaten in eight matches this season, winning seven including Saturday’s 1-0 win at Southampton. In that outing they had to defend for prolonged passages having overrun all of their previous opponents apart from Stoke City, with whom they only drew 2-2.

Dele Alli breathes life into Tottenham to give them a Wembley win against CSKA

There was more at stake for Tottenham Hotspur than securing their place in the last 32 of the Europa League in February – the merits of which continue to feel a little dubious – and Mauricio Pochettino knew it. How else could his team selection have been explained?

The starting XI that he sent out was stronger than that which he had named in the previous Champions League tie away against Monaco, when the club’s hopes had been on the line. This time, Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen played, rather than Kieran Trippier and Kevin Wimmer – although Mousa Dembélé was rested. Christian Eriksen started and he excelled.

Tottenham Hotspur v CSKA Moscow: Champions League – live!

10.54am GMT

Spurs are on their way to Wembley… Yes, this hasn’t worked out as planned, has it. Tottenham Hotspur have, like Arsenal years before them, suffered horribly in playing their home Champions League fixtures at the national stadium. Losses here to Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen fatally compromised their dreams in Uefa’s premier club competition, and so all that’s left is a chance to qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League, the Competition That Kills You © Mauricio Pochettino 2014.

On the face of it, tonight’s match represents Hobson’s Choice for Spurs. Pochettino has also stated in the past that “it is very difficult to manage the Europa League with the Premier League and both cups”, so presumably won’t be that worried if his side fall to a third home defeat out of three in Group E, and allow tonight’s opponents CSKA – the Central Sport Club of the Army – to sneak into the competition instead. But on the other hand, they’ll not want to encourage talk of a Wembley jinx, given the club look likely to play all their home fixtures in every competition here next season while old White Hart Lane is razed to the ground. Also, the much-maligned Europa League can be a whole lot of fun once it warms up, as fans of Middlesbrough, Fulham, Liverpool and especially Chelsea can attest.
