Ronaldo, nightclubs and my summer at the 1997 Copa América | Jack Carroll

When he wasn’t winning the Copa América for Brazil or breaking the world transfer record, the original Ronaldo enjoyed a few big nights out in La Paz

By Jack Carroll for The Set Pieces, part of the Guardian Sport Network

It was a good time to be a young man looking to break into the big, bad world of football writing. I started a week’s work experience at the Sunday Telegraph sports desk on the day England lost on penalties to Germany at Euro 96. It turned into another week and so on. I had no journalistic training, did not know shorthand and was completely winging it, but ended up staying for five years.

In the summer of 1997 the internet was in its infancy – people used to buy newspapers – and if you wanted to work in sports journalism, the Telegraph was highly regarded. The sports editor, Colin Gibson, was a former chief football writer, and he knew everyone. Rumour has it that Sepp Blatter once held up a Uefa press conference as Colin was late in arriving, saying: “Ve vill vait for Mister Big.”

Chile’s super-predators are now South America’s most dangerous team

While Argentina and Brazil have problems on and off the field, La Roja’s Copa America win showed once again they are a fearless, united group of players

Football is strange. Chile are Copa América champions for the second time in their history … and for the second time in the space of 12 months. And they beat Argentina in successive finals without scoring a goal. It was enough to force Lionel Messi’s shocking resignation from the national team.

But while much of the focus will now turn to Messi’s decision to quit, we should acknowledge Chile’s achievements. Both finals showcased a team who imposed their pace on the game and deserved to win: the games in Santiago and in New Jersey were played exactly as Chile wanted – with hard-fought, extremely intense football with no open space and no chance for some of the world’s most dangerous strikers to play freely. More importantly, it’s Argentina who changed their style in order to face Chile, not the other way around. Argentina were still cautious despite the 2-1 win over Chile in the group stages.

Copa América 2016: Guardian writers pick their highs and lows

From Lionel Messi’s superhuman abilities to Luis Suárez’s tantrum, our writers share their best and worst memories from USA’s summer of soccer

Sometimes the obvious choice is the only choice. Despite his back injury, Lionel Messi was magnificent in this tournament, as balletic and graceful and incisive as ever, scoring five goals, including that stunning free-kick against the USA, and registering four assists. A penalty miss in the final was the only mark against him. JW

Chile win Copa América once again as Argentina title drought continues

  • Argentina 0-0 Chile (Chile win 4-2 on penalties)
  • Lionel Messi misses spot-kick in shoot-out
  • Both teams end match with 10 men after stormy contest

This was to have been the match that sealed Lionel Messi’s legacy. The one that silenced the doubters, that killed off the question mark hanging over his greatness, that gave him his place in the pantheon next to Diego Maradona and showed he could achieve the same success with Argentina that has become so staggeringly routine at club level. Instead, it became The Night Messi Missed.

Goalless after 120 minutes, a game that during the first half looked on course to be decided by over-zealous officiating instead had to be settled by penalties. This wasn’t the first time the stomach-churning lottery of spot kicks has been needed to separate Argentina and Chile, of course. Last year, it was the heroics of Claudio Bravo and Alexis Sánchez’s ice-cool Panenka that clinched the Copa América for La Roja.
