Samu Saiz scored a hat-trick on his debut as Leeds eased into the second round of the Carabao Cup with a 4-1 win over Port Vale at Elland Road.

Saiz, a reported £3m summer signing from Spanish club Huesca in July, took 13 minutes to make an impression when he smashed home a rebound from close range. Despite Michael Tonge’s equaliser against his former club, Saiz netted twice more in as many minutes in the second half, before fellow debutant Caleb Ekuban added a late fourth.

Ched Evans ‘delighted’ to seal Sheffield United return from Chesterfield

• Striker signs three-year contract and says he has much to prove

Sheffield United have announced the re-signing of Ched Evans from Chesterfield on a three-year contract. The striker was released by United in the summer of 2012 after he was found guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman and sentenced to five years in prison. That conviction was quashed and at a retrial last year Evans was found not guilty.

Evans told United’s website: “I am delighted to be back. I still feel I have plenty to prove in football both at club and international level and I believe I can achieve those goals at United, playing in front of the terrific fans whose support I have always appreciated.

Chesterfield have announced the signing of Ched Evans, three months before the 27-year-old faces retrial for the rape conviction he had quashed in April.

Evans said he is “very excited and privileged to be resuming my career at Chesterfield” and according to reports will earn less than £2,000 a week when he officially joins on 1 July, some way off the £20,000 salary per week he earned at Sheffield United where he worked under the current Spireites manager, Danny Wilson.

Ched Evans submits ‘fresh evidence’ to try to get rape conviction overturned

The former Sheffield United striker Ched Evans has submitted “fresh evidence” which he hopes will get his rape conviction overturned.

A statement on his website says the submissions were made to the Criminal Cases Review Commission on his behalf on Friday. It is claimed that these details “strengthen” his case.

Ched Evans website to be investigated over alleged identification of rape victim

CPS asked to consider criminal charges against people behind footballer’s website, which posted CCTV footage of victim

The attorney general has asked prosecutors to consider criminal charges against the individuals behind the Ched Evans website for allegedly identifying the woman he raped.

In CCTV footage posted on the website, which was set up by Evans’s family and friends in 2012 to protest his innocence, the victim is seen entering the hotel in Rhyl where she was later attacked. Clearly visible in the footage, with her face obscured, she is seen entering and leaving the hotel on the night of the attack. The footage, which was part of the material used in the criminal case against Evans, is posted under the headline: “Too Drunk to consent, too drunk to remember”. The site asks viewers to “judge for yourself” whether she looked drunk in the footage.
