European roundup: James Rodríguez inspires Bayern to Bundesliga summit

• On loan Real Madrid forward scores and assists in 3-0 win at Schalke
• Internazionale go top of Serie A despite surrendering 100% record

James Rodríguez made a stunning full debut for Bayern Munich as the Bundesliga champions returned to top spot for at least 24 hours with a 3-0 win at Schalke, while there was a change of leadership in Serie A, too, though Internazionale will be far less happy with only drawing 1-1 at Bologna, surrendering their 100% record.

Manchester City have been monitoring the 19-year-old’s progress for some time and have seen him blossom into a brilliant finisher who is capable of leading the line or playing in a deeper role. Dolberg has also been linked with several other English clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United and Everton but City look like favourites, especially if Sergio Agüero departs.

• Runaway leaders Juventus and Bayern Munich win 1-0

Lionel Messi scored twice as La Liga champions, Barcelona, saw off a persistent Valencia, who had Eliaquim Mangala sent off in the first half, to win 4-2 and stay on the heels of the leaders, Real Madrid.
