Timo Werner is “feeling better” after he asked to be substituted due to the intense noise created by the home supporters during RB Leipzig’s Champions League defeat to Besiktas on Tuesday.

The Germany striker was withdrawn after 32 minutes of the 2-0 defeat which left the Bundesliga side bottom of Group G, having earlier asked for ear plugs in a bid to help him cope with the loud atmosphere inside the Vodafone Arena. Leipzig later revealed that Werner had complained of suffering from “circulatory problems” and dizziness, with the 21-year-old now said to be “feeling better” by the club.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in his 150th European club match as Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund for the first time in Germany. His goals wrapped up a 3-1 win after Gareth Bale had put them ahead with a superb volley in the 18th minute.

Ronaldo doubled Real’s lead before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled a goal back in the 54th minute but the Portuguese international confirmed the holders’ victory when he fired past Dortmund’s keeper Roman Buerki in the 79th minute.

Five years ago it looked like the Istanbul big three – Galatasaray, Fenerbahce and Besiktas – were about to become two. Besiktas were struggling with £250m of debt, 142 lawsuits and a suspension from Uefa competitions.

“Nobody else wanted to run this club, we were on the verge of collapse,” Fikret Orman said after his election as Besiktas president in 2012 – and he was probably right.

Lyon’s Europa League tie with Besiktas delayed after violence erupts in stands

• Europa League quarter-final first leg was delayed by 45 minutes

Football was left scarred by another sickening night of violence as supporters fought in the stands and fans raced to the pitch for safety before Lyon’s Europa League tie with Besiktas.

The first leg of the quarter-final was delayed for 45 minutes after punches, projectiles and firecrackers were thrown at the Parc OL. Both teams were forced to leave the field as fans spilled on to the playing surface before kick-off, with the Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas even going into the crowd in a desperate effort to calm tensions.

Nabil Fekir and Alexandre Lacazette fired late goals as Lyon hit back to beat Roma 4-2 at the Stade des Lumières. Roma struck twice through Mohamed Salah and Federico Fazio to lead at half-time after Mouctar Diakhaby had given Lyon an early lead.

The Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso restored parity early in the second period and, after Fekir had put the French side ahead, Lacazette added a crucial fourth in stoppage time.
