Ashley Cole still burns: forgotten man will not forget his English foes | Ewan Murray

The LA Galaxy left-back is living a relatively quiet life in Hollywood but still blames the English press for the negative perception of him in his homeland

Confirmation that LA Galaxy have failed in their quest to reach the MLS play-offs may arrive on Sunday. If not, such news will not have to wait much longer. Twenty-nine regular season games thus far have returned just 27 points. Galaxy are second bottom of the Western Conference, an embarrassing scenario for a club defined by celebrity and success, to the point where almost $4m per year is currently bestowed upon Giovani dos Santos as a base salary and five MLS Cups are housed at the StubHub Center, where David Beckham used to be their most celebrated playing star.

Galaxy’s latest capitulation took place here in Atlanta on Wednesday, where they were 4-0 – and a man – down by half-time. Atlanta United, such a success on and off the field in this, their debut MLS season, did not need to bother adding to the scoreline. Sigi Schmid, who has endured a fraught time since returning as Galaxy’s head coach in late July, bemoaned a “lack of focus” in a defence that was pulled apart by Atlanta’s menacing front four.

Premier League at 25: the best XI, from Petr Cech to Thierry Henry

Our team, selected in a 4-4-2 formation, finds no space for Gary Neville or Frank Lampard but includes no fewer than seven British players

Eagle-eyed readers who have been following this series of all-time Premier League selections will shortly notice that the player we have declared the finest of the past 25 years is, curiously, not good enough for our combined best XI. What follows will not chime with everyone’s opinion, or even, clearly, our own. Eric Cantona was a marvellous player, the kind of maverick genius man for the big occasion who gets singled out for individual awards, but two other forwards exist whose claims for a first-team place are in my opinion indisputable, which leaves no room for Cantona, Luis Suárez, Wayne Rooney, Sergio Agüero or any number of strikers who have thrilled and bewitched this past quarter-century.

Besides, something had to be done to stop Manchester United’s dominance of the past 25 years turning this into a best-of-the-Sir-Alex-Ferguson-years selection. In all 27 of the 30 people to have won the league four or more times in the Premier League era played at Old Trafford under the Scot, but only two of them – plus two players who won three titles there – are in our XI. There could certainly have been a couple more, or a fabulous team could be compiled containing none at all. There is certainly no shortage of candidates for selection.

Concacaf Champions League: Ashley Cole helps LA Galaxy to goalless draw

  • Los Angeles Galaxy 0-0 Santos Laguna
  • Nigel de Jong and Ashley Cole make debuts for MLS side

Dan Kennedy made five saves and the new-look Los Angeles Galaxy held Santos Laguna to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday night.

After failing to defend the MLS title last season, the Galaxy underwent another overhaul heavy on star power. Five newcomers were in the starting lineup, including former England defender Ashley Cole and Dutch midfielder Nigel de Jong, and it didn’t take long for that added strength to show itself.

Why are English footballers so reluctant to move to other European leagues?

The English footballers who move to the continent tend to be prima donnas and bad boys. Why don’t more players test themselves in mainland Europe?

By Eamonn Foster for In Bed With Maradona, of the Guardian Sport Network

I asked a Spanish reporter if any big clubs in the Peninsula had eyes on British stars. “I don’t think so,” he said. “You have some grand craftsmen, but the Spanish prefer artistes, of which you have only a dozen or so. It’s also exceptional for British professionals to be happy abroad.” Bill Croft writing in the November 1958 issue of Charles Buchan’s Football Monthly magazine.

Now, consider these names: Ashley Cole, Ravel Morrison, Joey Barton, Joe Cole, Micah Richards and Jermaine Pennant. At first glance it might appear to be a list of the footballers called most frequently to stand in front of FA panels for disciplinary hearings. However, as it happens, these are the most noticeable names from a remarkably small group of English footballers of recent times to have left home for one of the other major European leagues. And for that, they should be credited. But we must wonder why this is the case.

A brief guide to … LA Galaxy’s Ashley Cole, once the world’s finest left-back

The English defender comes to MLS having won everything there is to win. Forget the lurid headlines, he was unquestionably a world-class operator

With the Guardian’s unstoppable rise to global dominance** we at Guardian US thought we’d run a series of articles for fans wishing to improve their knowledge of the sports history and storylines, hopefully in a way that doesn’t patronise you to within an inch of your life. A warning: If you’re the kind of person that finds The Blizzard too populist this may not be the series for you.

** Actual dominance may not be global. Or dominant

An Englishman abroad in football remains a peculiar and uneasy export | Amy Lawrence

After the travails of Micah Richards and Ashley Cole in Serie A, is it a coincidence that England’s best World Cup performance since 1966 was in 1990, during a period when more of the nation’s coveted talent played overseas?

Not long after the news that Micah Richards’ undistinguished season in Fiorentina ended with a swift return to a more familiar workplace at Aston Villa, it was predictable that rumours would surface about Ashley Cole’s predicament at Roma and a possible exit strategy. The pair of them, both England internationals and with Premier League winners’ medals in their collections, had gone to Italy last summer with optimism, enthusiasm, goodwill and not a little intrigue – it’s not as if English players regularly trade home comforts for the challenge of an overseas adventure.

It is deflating to acknowledge how their Italian trips fizzled out so soon. It remains a peculiarity – a foible that’s a little weird to be honest – that England seems to be the one country that does not easily export footballers. Yes, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard – finally – are due to experience their American dream in MLS. The absence of an English player in his prime trying his luck at an elite European club, however, goes on. It is around about a decade since Real Madrid took David Beckham, Steve McManaman and Michael Owen to La Liga. Since then, not so much of substance.

Ashley Cole on shortlist for England’s Player of the Year award

• Former Chelsea defender played only 45 minutes in a friendly
• Wayne Rooney and Joe Hart favourites to take honour

The Roma defender Ashley Cole is a surprise inclusion on the Football Association’s online poll to find England’s player of 2014 despite playing just 45 minutes in a friendly against Denmark.

The former Chelsea left-back announced his retirement from international football in May after being left out of Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad in favour of Luke Shaw. Cole won his 107th and final cap in the 1-0 win at Wembley before being replaced at half-time by Shaw.
