Tottenham’s Harry Kane targets away victory against Real Madrid next month

• England striker has scored nine goals in last five Spurs matches
• Kane: ‘We feel we can beat anyone on our day’

Harry Kane says that Tottenham Hotspur will go to Real Madrid next month to win as he felt the confidence overflow after his hat-trick in Tuesday night’s 3-0 Champions League victory at Apoel Nicosia.

The striker admits that he has never felt better, on the back of the rich vein of form he has found this month. Kane did not panic after his quirk of not finding the net in August continued and, so far in September, he has scored twice in two matches for England and nine in five for Tottenham.

Mauricio Pochettino praises ‘killer’ Harry Kane after Spurs hat-trick

• Tottenham manager says striker has ‘something special in front of goal’
• Kane’s treble earns 3-0 win at Apoel Nicosia in Champions League Group H

Mauricio Pochettino described Harry Kane as a “killer” in front of goal after watching him drag Tottenham Hotspur almost single-handedly to a 3-0 Champions League win at Apoel Nicosia.

Kane scored a hat-trick to maintain his irrepressible recent form and make it two wins from two for his club in Group H. Tottenham are level on points at the top of the section with Real Madrid, who they now face in a double-header. The first tie is at the Bernabéu on 17 October.

Harry Kane’s slick hat-trick smooths Tottenham’s path past Apoel Nicosia

When Harry Kane was last in Cyprus, he scored in Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 win against AEL Limassol in the Europa League. The date was 21 August 2014 and it was his first goal under Mauricio Pochettino and his sixth for the club.

This time, he departed with the match ball, having sunk Apoel Nicosia in the Champions League with the perfect hat‑trick – left foot, right foot, header, in that order – and the statistics show that the striker now has 108 goals for Tottenham.

Apoel Nicosia v Tottenham Hotspur: Champions League – live!

8.30pm BST

45 mins: Son carries the ball into the Apoel half, and spots Trippier in all sorts of space on the left, but his pass is slow and Vouros comes across in time to cut it out.

8.29pm BST

43 mins: The goal was far from deserved, but on the plus side it should bring Apoel out of their (clam)shell, even if, for all their defending, they had come closest to scoring.

Harry Kane scores in 4 consecutive #UCL matches. Among English players only Steven Gerard has achieved this feat. #COYS

Harry Kane narrows the gap with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

The Big Two may have rewritten the record books but the Spurs striker’s statistics show he is closing the gap and may even dream of winning the Ballon d’Or

To Harry Kane it is a numbers game and, like every football fan in Europe, the Tottenham Hotspur striker is in awe of those posted by two players in particular. You know who they are. There was a time when a goalscorer would be feted for getting 20 in a league season; for reaching a ratio of one in every two matches. That was in the era before Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

From Belvedere to Barcelona, Bulgaria and beyond: the life of a football nomad

Cillian Sheridan’s career has taken him from telling Leo Messi to ‘fuck off’ in Camp Nou to challenging for the Polish league, via Cyprus, Sofia and Scotland

By Jonathan Drennan for Behind the Lines, part of the Guardian Sport Network

Cillian Sheridan sits in his apartment in the picturesque city of Bialystok in Poland preparing for training with the local top tier football team Jagiellonia Bialystok. Sheridan lives here with his girlfriend, Jodie, and their Irish accents have already marked them out as slight curiosities in a city that adores its high-flying football club.

Sheridan has enjoyed some remarkable highs. He has played against Lionel Messi twice – for the Republic of Ireland against Argentina in the first international at the Aviva Stadium in 2010 and for Apoel Nicosia in the Champions League in 2014 – but his career has always been peripatetic. Poland is the latest stop in a professional career that has also taken in Scotland, Cyprus and Bulgaria.

• Lyon beat Roma 4-2 in France
• Schalke and Borussia Mönchengladbach finish 1-1 in all-German match

Europa League roundup: Napoli reach last 32 with 100% record

• Nathaniel Chalobah scores in Italian side’s 5-2 win over Legia Warsaw
• Bryan Ruiz strikes for Sporting Lisbon in 3-1 victory over Besiktas

The Chelsea loanee Nathaniel Chalobah’s goal helped Napoli advance with the Europa League’s only 100% record. The England Under-21 international, who is yet to play a senior game for José Mourinho’s Blues, broke the deadlock in Naples as the Italians made it six wins from six with a 5-2 success over Legia Warsaw.

Their qualification had already been sealed before kick-off and FC Midtjylland joined them in advancing out of Group D thanks to a 1-1 draw with Club Brugge, for whom the ex-Middlesbrough and Burnley forward Jelle Vossen scored.
