Carlisle women-riders-only card offers title boost to Josephine Gordon

• Gordon leads Tom Marquand by one in apprentice championship
• ‘Carlisle’s card is a really good initiative to support female jockeys’

While Glorious Goodwood was grabbing the racing headlines last week the north Devon village of Chittlehampton was more focused on cheering its local hero, Josephine Gordon, who had seized the lead in this year’s apprentice jockeys’ title race.

The 23-year-old rode two winners on Thursday to lift her total in the championship to 28 from 220 rides, one more than her main rival Tom Marquand (27-247) who has drawn a blank in the past seven days. And on Monday Gordon has a big chance to extend her lead when she travels for the first time in her career to Carlisle, which stages the world’s only race meeting exclusively for female jockeys. Now in its sixth year, the Flat card has seven races in which the riders compete for the Durdar Trophy.
