Bulls enter New Year with four game lead

January 01, 2015 18:34:41 UK

Derrick Rose will look to improve his shooting against Denver.

The Chicago Bulls will look to increase their lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Central Division on Thursday when they welcome in the Denver Nuggets to the United Center.

The presumptive favorites in the Eastern Conference following off-season moves that included the acquisition of free agent Pau Gasol, the Bulls find themselves two games back of the Toronto Raptors to start the New Year and trailing also the Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards.

Tuesday a poor shooting evening from Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler doomed Chicago to a surprising loss to the visiting Brooklyn Nets.

The backcourt duo combined for just 12 points on 5-of-27 from the floor as the team shot 38% from the field in the 96-82 defeat. Brook Lopez paced the Nets with 29 points and Joe Johnson added a double-double for a Brooklyn side that remains in the conversation for a playoff place despite a losing record.

Over in Cleveland no LeBron James or Kevin Love resulted in a 16-point home loss to the Milwaukee Bucks at the Quicken Loans Arena. Kyrie Irving dropped in 25 points for the hosts, but received little support from the rest of the starting five. Tristan Thompson’s double-double looked good on paper although realistically a -19 plus/minus was more indicative of the power forward’s contribution.

With the media openly questioning whether rookie head coach David Blatt has lost the team, the next few games could be crucial for a Cavaliers side that sits fifth in the Eastern Conference.

The Bulls are 6.50 to win the NBA Championship, while the Cavaliers can be backed at 5.00.
