Bruce confirms interest in Defoe

Hull City manager Steve Bruce has confirmed his interest in signing England striker Jermain Defoe in the January transfer window.

Bruce has made no secret of his desire to strengthen his attacking options and Defoe is understood to be keen on a return to the Premier League from MLS side Toronto FC.

The KC Stadium boss admitted Defoe’s £68,000 per week wages could be a problem but said he would very keen to talk to the former Tottenham and Portsmouth goal-getter.

“If he becomes available, which I believe he is, then we’d love to do something,” Bruce said after his side’s 2-0 win over Everton on New Year’s Day.

“I think it might be too expensive but it’s not a bad bit of speculation.”

QPR manager Harry Redknapp said recently he too would like to re-sign Defoe but Bruce was bullish about his side’s chances of landing the striker.

Hull only scored five goals in the Premier League in the whole of November and December in 2014 and Bruce said Defoe, who signed a four-year deal with Toronto last January, could help the club avoid another relegation scrap.

Defoe scored 11 goals in his 19 Major League Soccer games for Toronto but his new club failed to reach the end-of-season play-offs and sacked head coach Ryan Nelsen.

“There’s always speculation. You ask any club in the bottom of the division about Defoe, all of us would say yes,” Bruce told reporters. “Whether we can do it financially is another problem.”

Hull City are currently priced 3.00 to be relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season.
