British Gymnastics stands down to allow independent review into abuse

  • UK Sport and Sport England will take over investigation
  • Several gymnasts have come forward in past two weeks

British Gymnastics has stepped aside from its own review into allegations of widespread abuse in the sport after mounting criticism that it would lack integrity or independence. It will now be co-commissioned by UK Sport and Sport England instead.

More than a dozen British gymnasts have come forward over the past 10 days to detail their experiences, including the Olympic medallists Becky and Ellie Downie, who said abuse in the sport had been “completely normalised”.
