Britain beats Russians at curling but ‘steely’ Eve Muirhead wants gold

There were precisely two Russians supporting their women’s curlers in their grudge match against Team GB on Wednesday, and one of those was dressed as Father Christmas. Which made the vigorous, if tinny, chants of “Russ-ee-ya! Russ-ee-ya!” that suddenly erupted around the Gangdeung Curling Arena more than a little disconcerting.

Santa, it turned out, had come bearing gifts. There were mini Russian flags, which were waved excitedly by a couple of dozen South Korean schoolkids, as well as a crash course for them in a chant that had been sung so vigorously in Sochi four years ago. Russ-ee-ya! Rus-ee-ya!
