Bouchard overpowers Williams Down Under

Eugenie Bouchard continued her preparations for the Australian Open with a win over Serena Williams on Tuesday.

Eugenie Bouchard secured a first ever victory over Serena Williams with a 6-2 6-1 win in the Hopman Cup.

Canadian Bouchard had lost both of her previous matches to the world number one but proved too strong for Williams in Perth on Tuesday.

Williams had complained of jet-lag in her 0-6 6-3 6-0 win over Flavia Pennetta on Monday and she was way below her best against Bouchard.

There were flashes of brilliance from the 33-year-old, but Williams struggled with her footwork and service game as she was outclassed by Bouchard.

Bouchard, who bounced back from a 6-0 6-4 defeat by Czech Lucie Safarova in her Hopman Cup opener, was delighted with her performance after seeing off Williams.

She said: “I think I played pretty solid, I’m happy I came out and put on a better show than last time.”

Bouchard, the world number six, can be backed at 11.00 to win the Australian Open outright ahead of the Grand Slam event in Melbourne later this month.

Williams is 2.87 to add a sixth Australian Open title to her Grand Slam collection and Maria Sharapova is 8.00 to take the top prize Down Under.
