Blue Jays extend winning streak

The Toronto Blue Jays lead the American League East Division by a couple of games entering play on Monday following their victory over the Oakland Athletics at the Rogers Centre on Sunday.

Fresh from taking three games from the Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston, the Blue Jays continued their fine form with a sweep of the A’s over the weekend.

Edwin Encarnacion slugged his 14th of the year and JA Happ (4-1) struck out seven over seven innings to pick up the win as Toronto continue to be the only side in the Division with a positive run differential.

Now at +23 following the 3-1 victory, that run differential bodes well for the Blue Jays and their post-season hopes even this early in the campaign as they look to stay ahead of the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees.

On Monday the visitors are the Tampa Bay Rays who arrive in town after also completing a sweep of the Red Sox, although the Rays did so at Tropicana field in St Petersburg.

Evan Longoria and Sean Rodriguez went yard for the hosts in the 8-5 triumph as Joel Peralta (2-3) blew the save and picked up the win in only the way that baseball’s convoluted scoring rules can.

The veteran right-hander conceded two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out one in the seventh inning, but a five-run rally from the Rays in the bottom of the inning helped record the victory.

Drew Hutchison gets the call for the Blue Jays in the opener and the Rays are scheduled to counter with Erik Bedard who has yet to go more than six innings in any start, but has pitched well in his last five outings.

The Rays areĀ 34.00 to win the World Series outright, while the Blue Jays can be backed at 19.00.
