Sam Allardyce has urged Sunderland supporters to offer Jan Kirchhoff the benefit of the doubt following the former Bayern Munich centre-half’s disastrous debut.

After his introduction as a substitute at Tottenham last Saturday, Kirchhoff deflected a shot into his own net and conceded a penalty as his relegation threatened team lost 4-1. That little cameo sparked wholesale criticism but Allardyce maintains it is far too early to judge the £750,000 recruit from Bayern’s reserves.
