Bettors Fire makes full recovery

New Zealand import Bettors Fire has survived a health scare and has been given the all-clear to race in tonight’s Group 1 $400,000 WA Pacing Cup (2936m) at Gloucester Park.

Bettors Fire’s preparation has been disrupted by a mouth ulcer but he has been given the nod to race and will be driven aggressively in the feature event.

Trainer-reinsman Kyle Harper told stewards yesterday the six-year-old gelding, a winner of 24 races, would begin quickly from gate six and contest the early lead. Harper also says Bettors Fire’s mouth ulcer would be telling.

“We’ve been assured Bettors Fire is 99 per cent right following the mouth ulcer setback,” chief steward Carl Coady said. “It’s planned he’ll take up a forward position.”

Bettors Fire missed a Village Kid Sprint (1730m) start on Boxing Day after Harper’s nomination was late. It meant the horse had not started for a month when fourth to David Hercules in last Friday’s Fremantle Cup (2536m).

The Gary Hall-trained pair Northview Punter and Toretto appear to hold the key tonight. It is expected they will share the lead before one draws clear.

Coady confirmed Hall’s forward-running plans when routinely questioning trainers on possible tactics yesterday.

“The Hall stable plans to go forward with both Northview Punter and Toretto at the start,” Coady said.

“Their other runners Soho Highroller, Soho Jackman and My Hard Copy will be restrained early.”
